Yesterday, a Danish climatologist Steffen M. Olsen, who is an author of that viral photo, posted a video of the scene.
Although the melting of ice in summer is normal in Greenland, the temperatures in that part of Greenland are in the extreme range even for this time of year.
Olsen reports that unusually high temperatures of 17ºC have been recorded in Qaanaaq.
Melting #seaice in summer is normal & flooding seen before, but temperatures of 17C in Qaanaaq are extreme for early June.
As you can see in Windy’s extreme weather forecast below, extreme temperatures and melting of the Greenland ice is about to continue.
If you're not convinced it could be a sign of a climate change, see the data from National Snow and Ice Data Center (US). Unlike the exceptional days here and there, it shows the ice melt in Greenland 2019 versus 1981-2010 median.
