I might be of some help to you in finding a sustainable business model.

For about a week now, I've been at home in Santa Barbara in the cross hairs downwind of a very large wildfire. If there is a blessing in this, It's that it led me to windy.com, for reasons you can imagine.

I saw your posts and a few others on the business model quest and have a few sustainable directions to offer (with a fun backstory as to how the idea presented itself).

Here's my profile . What's not there is the surfing, sailing, hang gliding stuff... so I'm also personally blown away by the project.

          David

                  Hello.
Is it possible to get historical data from the Chernobyl disaster (25. April 1986 to 28. April 1986)?

I have a project about the Chernobyl disaster. Showing the wind animation from the date will help me a lot.

If there's historical data from the Chernobyl disaster, that I can have access to, please send a message to me on:
                  sigurdemde@gmail.com

                  Cheers!

                    or

where you can see radioactive cloud driven by prevailing winds.

Thank for the help. But do you know a website where I can see a wind animation of the Chernobyl disaster?
The ones you've sent is the radioactivity that has spread all over Europe, but I would also like to get a map over the wind, such as Windy.com's design

Here you can find some archived data.
                          http://www.wetterzentrale.de/reanalysis.php?map=1&model=noaa&var=3&jaar=1986&maand=04&dag=25&uur=1200&h=0&tr=360&nmaps=24#mapref

Note: I sent you the "radioactivity animation" as it takes into account many wind fields (for many days and in many levels).

If you are interested in official data, you have to contact:
                                https://www.knmi.nl/over-het-knmi/how-to-contact-knmi

As I can see, nearby there is the Twenthe Airport.
At the airport (location indicator EHTW) there is a meteorological station
and (I believe) people there can provide you data needed.
Also you can search the internet for actual weather data for met. station
Twenthe Airport, EHTW in various sites
                                e.g. https://weatherspark.com/y/148062/Average-Weather-at-Twenthe-Airport-Netherlands-Year-Round

Also, you can download the data from Twenthe Automatic Weather Station, here

Re: storage. Access even to a very sub-sampled historical data would be useful as well!

If you have data at 1 degree resolution, that is roughly 360*180 points per globe. If you were to only keep 5 (7, 10) basic measurements (pressure, temperaturue, wind speed/direction, precipitation) at three different altitudes (0, 850hPa, 500hPa), it gives you: 360 * 180 * 5 * 3 * 4 (bytes per float32), which is about 4MB per measurement. Sample it every 3 hours over a year, and that would be 8GB/year. Go to 0.5 degree resolution, and that's 32GB/year. That still can fit on my laptop. And I think grib files actually use less than 4 bytes per point.

I was also frustrated with the lack of any ways to access historical data. So I'm actually planning to download a bunch of grib files from public GFS server, select only relevant timepoints/layers, and save them for viewing in existing grib viewers (or publish them somewhere). It is still a lot of work, probably a week of coding for me, and however many days/weeks to download the data. I may actually do this project at some point.
