How can I access historical data?
-
Re: storage. Access even to a very sub-sampled historical data would be useful as well!
If you have data at 1 degree resolution, that is roughly 360*180 points per globe. If you were to only keep 5 (7, 10) basic measurements (pressure, temperaturue, wind speed/direction, precipitation) at three different altitudes (0, 850hPa, 500hPa), it gives you: 360 * 180 * 5 * 3 * 4 (bytes per float32), which is about 4MB per measurement. Sample it every 3 hours over a year, and that would be 8GB/year. Go to 0.5 degree resolution, and that's 32GB/year. That still can fit on my laptop. And I think grib files actually use less than 4 bytes per point.
I was also frustrated with the lack of any ways to access historical data. So I'm actually planning to download a bunch of grib files from public GFS server, select only relevant timepoints/layers, and save them for viewing in existing grib viewers (or publish them somewhere). It is still a lot of work, probably a week of coding for me, and however many days/weeks to download the data. I may actually do this project at some point.

Is it possible to view data less than 24 hours ago?
I assumed this was possible, but there is a reset at 00:00. -
@bartbv I found out, this is possible by changing your computers local time.

@ivo Historical data is very important to some researchers and users

At some point we should talk. I might be able to help. Dr. Duncan. Send me your email if you'd like to...

thanks understand ,
I am working on finding a sustainable shipping solution by harnessing wind energy on ships and for which i need to understand the wind patterns /speed along the Indian Peninsular . If there is an paid subscription for historical view or any other arrangements possible , please do let me know .

@gkikas-lgpz
thank you ,
I would like to have historical wind patterns say Jan ,Feb so on to December so as to understand how it blows from where and how strong .Brgds

Hi, Ivo.
As a farmer, I definitely need the historical data.

Please. It would be great for ocean rowing.

I understand the issue with funding, and space, but was none the less wondering if South Atlantic wave and wind data from August 30th was still cached or otherwise still in the database, or if it has already been purged. Thank you for making an amazing weather service! :)

@steffan-watkins
You can find historical data on south Atlantic here:

It is much important that historical data.
Windy should show 5 days past weather process in the web, that is really useful thing. -
Use weather stations for past 20 days data.

Windy is fabulous!
Past data would be really nice to have feature, if it is not going to cost you., As understood from above discussion.
https://earth.nullschool.net help to view past data though am not sure if the website pays for it or some sponsors, it seems to fetch data on demand instead of storing.
e.g.
Hudhud cycloneIf such an approach viable, your website could become a one place reference.
Thanks for providing a great experience with windy.

Pretty please, please, I love Windy, and historical data would make it even more amazing. I would pay 2€ monthly to have it.
