Windy launches Route Planner

Is it possible at your end (coding wise) to add the height of the terrain to the fcst freezing height which should then give the true freezing height abv sea level?
Thx
-
@stitch Sure, there is a picture from my local development IFR branch :-)

@marekd
For Freezing Altitude, please consider ...

You could consider the possibility of uploading the polars of a boat so to perform weather routing. To include thresholds on wave height, minimum wind speed for motoring, maximum wind and gust speed and the possibility of evaluating several departure times would be also desirable. Congratulations for the great job done until now.

@marekd ,
I'm loving it :)
Just had to get my head in the right space wrt ISA+/- . After a quick bit of Googling I can see the benefits of ISA esp with the tropopause highlighted and areas of potential instability/lower level inversions & cold/warm air advection. Neat!
Are the bottom 2 rows "cloud base height" & "cloud top height"?
I can't wait to get my hands on the Beta product......great work!!!!!!

Show also visibility along the route in the table.

@marekd Great tool! My recommendation: Let the user define somewhere in personal settings the boat speed in % of wind speed for e.g. 45°, 90°, and 135° plus maximum speed and have the tool calculating the progress of the boat along the route. Or, even better, build in the polar diagrams for some typical sailing yachts that the user can chose from in a drop down menu. The table should show the weather forecast along the route at the boat's calculated position while the time (and with it the weather forecast) is progressing. Let the user choose, if distance is indicated in kilometers or nautical miles.

Hello please is there a way to set the speed based on Ground Speed instead of wind speed? that would be useful for road planning! thanks!
-
Very cool!
still missing (but you already know, I see) possibility to change timing definition and vessel speed.
Thanks

When you use windy for boat travel you would want the distance traveled in Nautical miles. The only distance option I see is km which is useless to me. Windy use to offer that option why was it dropped?

As explained here above by @Gkikas-LGPZ, how you can change km by NM

🎉 Another update is out! 🎉
Changelog:
- add Aigram and IFR view
- add more wind marks at more altitude levels for VFR view
- add current view to URL for better sharing
- fix the freezing altitude curve
- highlight all clickable units to (hopefully) avoid repeated stupid posts
Thank you all for your feedback, it helped us a lot :-)

@Francfo hi Franco! you have a reason for that!!! but, with a new tecnology progress, you can buy a new Iridium Go and have wifi. Regarsd!!!

@marekd
Thank you very much for providing the IFR view!
It is very useful for pilots (and aviation meteorologists!).Please consider to add data for FL340 (250 hPa)
as this is a flight level used by most flights.
Data at 250 hPa are available at Windy as this is a standard level.
IMO you must add data at 250 hPa at "sounding" also
for reasons described here
https://community.windy.com/topic/7963/upper-air-temperatures -
@Cavajr I could buy a newer bigger boat, get a professional crew and let them worry about it!
You miss the point (really?) - products like Iridium are expensive, saving data on local device is not - simple! -
-
Very good, thanks!!
- visibility: km to sm conversion still not correct.
- overscrolling to the right navigates to the previous page. (In plugins setting overscroll-behavior-x: none, on various elements, does not stop this).
-
I too would like to see the 250hpa wind barbs added to the IFR cross section window - this flight level "FL340" is very useful like FL390 for commercial aircraft operations.
Regards

@Francfo Check out qtvlm, open source weather router. You can save grib file scenarios, run alternative routings, and save them all.

Very good. A great addition to the distance planner.
As a sailor, I would prefer wind direction to default to absolute, or north up. But not a priority, once I know how to make setting.
I like the default forecast all along the route defined for one specific moment that I choose on timeline. Moving forecast along the route depends on accurate guess of vmg, which of course changes with wind speed and sea state and accurate boat polars. Very complex and maybe best left to weather routing apps such as Predictwind and qtvlm.
