# Windy launches Route Planner

It's always nice to see demonstrations of the various different practical uses of Windy, so THANKS! :)

• Looks good. Hard to understand at first.

• The new Distance planning tool appears to be only in Kilometers (?) Any boat or air journey need to be measured in Nautical Miles.
Two years ago I used the Windy distance tools to weather-route a friends yacht from Vancouver to UK via Panama. And all distances were then given as nM. Why the change?
I note that wind speeds are still given as Knots .-

• @marekd One idea for future development: I am using your tool to plan sailing trips. It would be superior, if I could add properties of the current boat (speed in relation to wind angle and wind speed). So the tool could calculate, how fast the boat will be on every point of the journey and at what time wayponínts wíll be reached. :-) If that is working me as the Skipper (or the tool?) could check, what probably the fastest (ore most secure?) route will be ...

So what you want is a Routing App, like SailGrib or Squid Mobile apps or similar (they are several).

One of the problem is that Windy would have to include polar plot or polar diagram for many models of sailing boats, racing and pleasure boats, including for your boat otherwise you would be very disappointed.

This is a large library to update regularly.

• Distance mesurements is only in meters/km. We, who navigate need distance measurement in nm (nautical miles), as before.

Is it possible that we could get a circle radius measurement tool too?

• The Route Planner should have the capability to have speeds inserted for various legs/courses. This should inturn show the movement of the Ship/Boat over the legs with the forecast patterns.

Is it possible at your end (coding wise) to add the height of the terrain to the fcst freezing height which should then give the true freezing height abv sea level?

• You could consider the possibility of uploading the polars of a boat so to perform weather routing. To include thresholds on wave height, minimum wind speed for motoring, maximum wind and gust speed and the possibility of evaluating several departure times would be also desirable. Congratulations for the great job done until now.

Just had to get my head in the right space wrt ISA+/- . After a quick bit of Googling I can see the benefits of ISA esp with the tropopause highlighted and areas of potential instability/lower level inversions & cold/warm air advection. Neat!

Are the bottom 2 rows "cloud base height" & "cloud top height"?

I can't wait to get my hands on the Beta product......great work!!!!!!

• @marekd Great tool! My recommendation: Let the user define somewhere in personal settings the boat speed in % of wind speed for e.g. 45°, 90°, and 135° plus maximum speed and have the tool calculating the progress of the boat along the route. Or, even better, build in the polar diagrams for some typical sailing yachts that the user can chose from in a drop down menu. The table should show the weather forecast along the route at the boat's calculated position while the time (and with it the weather forecast) is progressing. Let the user choose, if distance is indicated in kilometers or nautical miles.
