Dramatic images. Heatwave melts down the Rocciamelone Glacier
-
Gianluca Abieri captured the dramatic situation on the Rocciamelone Glacier earlier this week. It was so hot that rivers of water formed towards the valley a brought some serious floods to Zermatt, a mountain resort in Switzerland located at an altitude of 1,600 meters in the Canton of Valais.
The pictures below are from Monday and Tuesday. Gianluca reported 23°C on the glacier.
The flood after the glacier melt
Zermatt experienced decent floods afterwards, a pocket of meltwater in the glacier is believed to be the cause.
The conditions are now back to normal, as you can see on Windy's extreme weather layer. Temperatures higher than average are expected in coming days again.
