Carbon is better in the boat, not in the atmosphere: Track Team Malizia and Greta on their journey across the Atlantic

I am Ivo, founder of Windy.
14 years ago I was part of the Czech sailing team RADOST (happiness in English) and we had a beautiful self-made carbon monohull T830. We won most of the races in fact, because we participated in a special category where better design and a faster boat gave us a big advantage.
A lot of time has passed since then, and hearing about Greta Thunberg setting sail to New York on a beautiful carbon IMOCA 60 monohull Malizia II brings back a lot of nice memories. So I am more than happy that we can provide a live tracker where you can see Greta's progress online, together with a wind and wave forecast and with almost real time satellite and lightning observation. Windy is a good choice for such a tracker since we DO NOT serve tracking cookies to users, and we are a free and zero-advertisement service. There was a time in our company's history when we wanted to turn Windy into a non-profit, Wikipedia like foundation, but complicated EU legislation and corporate greed of our providers destroyed these plans.
But back to Greta.

Details about Greta's trip can be found in Pavel's article here
In the next generations our societies will go through a big transformation called decarbonization and I am aware that a lot of activities and hobbies we have today will be reduced by carbon taxes and regulations. This is quite unsettling, but thanks to Greta and millions of young kids like her, I understand that the change is necessary. On the other hand, as a kiter and former sailor, I know how much fun a person can have with just a gust of wind. And that is the reason I founded Windy back in 2014.
Carbon is better in a boat than in the atmosphere.
Greta, enjoy the ride and stay safe.
Ivo

@ivo What a great idea! Thank you for adding this tracker. #TeamGreta

Ahoj Ivo, smekam, moc dobry napad a krasna zprava Grete. Zname se pres Kacu, stravili jsme yachtarsky vikend spolu na Lipne. Jen tak dal!

@ivo May the entire world get onboard with Greta! Gratitude to All who help her Sail !

Second reply, sorry for taking up space - but I really like how we can keep #TeamGreta's journey onscreen in different layers, that's such a cool feature!

Yes it's normal Windy under the tracking so you can change layers, see when Greta will have bad weather arriving, or good sailing conditions, etc :)

Brilliant and thanks for the tracker.
Question: For a non sailor can any one interpret for me, the route they are taking and the change in direction into the blue zone . I am guessing that there is less wind in the Blue zone than further north in the green and yellows, therefore easier sailing? = faster? = smoother ride?
100% backing team Greta.

@Huw-Griff
For the moment they are sailing upwind (in the opposite direction of the wind but with an angle of about 40 ° minimum from this direction). When the wind direction changes, they must change course. When the track shows an angle of about 90 °, it is because they are tacking (change the side by which the boat receives the wind).
To optimize the route, it is made mainly according to the direction of the wind. Of course, they should also avoid areas where there is little wind or too much wind.
I hope this helps to understand the route. -
@Huw-Griff
They have changed strategy and are now sailing crosswind to bypass the anticyclone by the South. At this point of sail the speed has increased significantly -
@idefix37
Many thanks makes more sense to me now. Huw -
@idefix37
Just so that I understand the live tracker chart better.
Am I right in thinking that:
The Blue area is little to no wind.
Greeen is moderate wind
Orange is strong wind
Red is a storm
would this be correct?

@Huw-Griff
Yes exactly. I have modified the wind layer colors for a more intuitive perception. The steps of this color scale are based on the Beaufort scale that mariners know. But every one can understand it easily.
If you like these colors, here is the way to use these settings:https://community.windy.com/topic/7233/wind-settings-for-sailors

Thanks

@ivo this is a fabulous app. Tracking Greta is truly marvellous, but I’mm Also thankful that it’s introduced me to Windy - wish I had it when I was sailing around the Atlantic 20 years ago! Great job!

@ idefix37, thank you for the guide how to apply the colors. It's very easy to remember everything and get used to the new scheme. Besides, red and orange have been always the markers of danger, so it's being perceived intuitively indeed.
