The route planner provides information for cars, boats, and airplanes as well. You can plan your trip to be as long as you want.

How to start route planner

If you are a pilot and plan the flight just put two airport ICAO codes to search bar, for example "LKPR KLAX".

Otherwise just right-click on the map, where your trip should start, and create your route, clicking on "Distance & planning" link.

Route planner will pop up from bottom of the screen:

In the left corner of the Elevation menu you can see units, which tells you how long the road is. By clicking on units, you can choose which units you need.

Below the units are Total ascent, Total descent, Max elevation, minimal elevation and on the bottom is Route detail, which shows you geographic coordinates and also allows you to download a scheduled trip in GPX and KML format or share your route.

Total ascent = provides a total of all increases to elevation

Total descent = is the sum of all height differences of those parts of the track descending.

Maximal elevation = provides the highest elevation achieved

Minimal elevation = provides the minimal elevation achieved

Car, hiking

Temperature = How many degrees it will be during the trip

Rain, Snow (mm) = How many mm of rain/snow there will be during the trip

Wind (kt) = Force of constant wind

Symbols illustrate wind speed and direction

Windy symbols at lower levels (e.g. at 1000 hPa) are shown relatively smaller than the same symbols at higher levels

Lines labelled means pressure in hPa (hectoPascal)

The “standard” pressure on the surface (sea level) is 1013 hPa. As we go up, the pressure falls, so at 850 hPa we are at an elevation of 1500m (5.000 ft) at 500 hPa, 18.000 ft etc

The winds aloft are amsl. Actually are the winds on standard isobaric surfaces. For example the wind at 5000ft is actually the wind on a “surface” of the atmosphere where the pressure is 850 hPa.

Over mountains those “isobaric surfaces” may intersect* (cut) the orography (land surface). Thus, if you point on Everest and choose wind at different altitudes you'll find out that wind “stays the same” at all levels from Om (msl) up to 8.000m.

Also here, all wind symbols show the same wind speed (25 kts)

VFR

Visual flight rules are a set of regulations under which a pilot operates an aircraft in weather conditions generally clear enough to allow the pilot to see where the aircraft is going. The weather must be better than basic VFR weather minima, i.e. in visual meteorological conditions (VMC). The pilot must be able to operate the aircraft with visual reference to the ground, and by visually avoiding obstructions and other aircraft

Rain, Snow (mm) = How much mm of rain/snow there will be during the trip

Convective r. = thunderstorms during the trip

Clouds, rain (mm) = How many mm of clouds/rain there will be during the trip

Weather warnings

Cloud tops (m) = At what maximum height clouds are

Cloud base (m) = At what minimum height clouds are

Surface visibility (km) = Surface visibility during the trip

Dew point spread (°C) = Dew point spread during the trip

IFR

Instrument flight rules (IRS) is one of two sets of regulations governing all aspects of civil aviation aircraft operations; the other is visual flight rules.

When operation of an aircraft under VFR is not safe, because the visual cues outside the aircraft are obscured by weather, instrument flight rules must be used instead.

ATC monitors IFR flights on radar, or through aircraft position reports in areas where radar coverage is not available

ISA difference = International Standard Atmosphere, is a model for the standardization of aircraft instruments

Weather warnings

Cloud tops = At what maximum height clouds are

How to choose your direction on the map

Our automatic settings is NORTH UP, but you can choose between 3 options

On these pictures you can see 3 maps with the same road but with a different direction of wind

NORTH UP = absolute direction of wind, direction of movement has no influence (ie. if the arrow or sign imply the direction to the top - the wind is blowing from the south, to the left - it’s blowing from the east etc...)

BOTTOM TO TOP = If the trip has a direction set to Bottom to top, then the wind direction will be shown as motion of your vehicle (car, plane, boat) moving on vertical axis oriented from Bottom to top and transferred by the angle of the vehicle on vertical axis.

LEFT TO RIGHT = If the trip has a direction set to Left to right, then the direction of the wind will be shown as motion of your vehicle (car, plane, boat) moving on horizontal axis oriented from left to right and transferred by the angle of the vehicle on horizontal axis.

Hope it helps!
I tried something different : importing my gpx file in the Flight planner plugin !!! and it kinda works : I do have to set an average speed which is not ideal but apart from that, the weather map changes with the position along the route.

In the gpx file I'd like to display, for each point I have a timestamp and a position (lat/long). There is no speed in the file.
But you are right that if you were to calculate the speed, it would be highly variable, anywhere btw 0 and 30kts.

I made a test with a GPX file from the Uploader library in Windy.
I found 2 conditions to see the weather map changing with the boat position along the route.

Set an average speed with the speed button ON

Click on the table at different time stamps. Not just grab the small grey panel.

In your case I suppose your file includes a variable speed calculated by the routing software.

In the video link I posted above, starting at 3'50", you see the whole procedure.
The video is from 3 years ago so things might have changed but he doesn't need to select boat trip or to enter any boat speed, straight away, the weather and the points on the route are in sync.

When I do it, I get this

The weather doesn't change as I move the mouse left to right.
If I do click on boat (which again was not needed in the video), and select a speed, the weather is in sync (but it's a premium feature).

My question really is about having the weather in sync with the position on the route.
Once the gpx is loaded in the planner, when I move the mouse left/right (in the bottom part of the screen), I can see highlighted the corresponding waypoint in the route but the weather doesnt change, it doesnt sync with the date of that particular point on the route.
As seen on the video that I linked, it was possible in the past and I was wondering if it was still the case.
Maybe it is a premium feature only ?
Thanks,

It is still possible to import a GPX file.
-> In menu select Distance & planning.
Then import your file, you will create a route with the Route planner features.

Uploading a boat routing in gpx and when hovering in the planner, the weather would update accordingly and the position on the route would be highlighted.
Hello,
Sorry, I don't share your statement on the problem you are reporting.
In the route planner, Windy displays only the true wind, not the apparent wind.
Try using the Flight option with a speed of 200 kt. You will see that it is not the apparent wind. Just the wind predicted by the weather model at the boat/plane position based on the time.
And the waves are only those predicted by the wave model based on the true wind and swell.
The difference between your screenshots (speed on and speed off) is only because when the speed is off, the wind and waves are those predicted at the time of start. When you set the speed, you get the wind and waves at the different time steps of the planned trip.
The route planner is reliable as long as the weather forecast is reliable and the boat speed is accurate. This last point in the case of a sailboat is probably the one that introduces maximum error because a sailboat rarely has a constant speed like a motorboat along a whole trip.

if i create a route , the prediction change if i activate a velocity of boat or if is deselected.

this is wright if is considered the AWS APPARENT WIND SPEED or the TWS TRUE WIND SPEED but i think this working on the contrary. if my boat direction is against the wind, the wind speed must increase if the wind is behind and must decrease.

Furthermore, the height of the wave must not be influenced by the speed of the boat or the apparent wind because it is determined only by the true wind.

I don't know how to point this out to the programmers but currently the route forecast is not reliable.

Hi, I don’t understand what you mean here above.

Anyway, the way to use the Route planner on a laptop and in the mobile app is almost similar. But the way to place waypoints is slightly different.

Tap on your screen to see the crosshairs and scroll the map to place the crosshairs at the location of your first waypoint. Then click on Distance & planning in the top banner. Scroll the map to place your second waypoint. Add this waypoint and repeat this until the end of your trip by clicking on End measurement.
