How to use a route planner

Hello,
Sorry, I don't share your statement on the problem you are reporting.
In the route planner, Windy displays only the true wind, not the apparent wind.
Try using the Flight option with a speed of 200 kt. You will see that it is not the apparent wind. Just the wind predicted by the weather model at the boat/plane position based on the time.
And the waves are only those predicted by the wave model based on the true wind and swell.
The difference between your screenshots (speed on and speed off) is only because when the speed is off, the wind and waves are those predicted at the time of start. When you set the speed, you get the wind and waves at the different time steps of the planned trip.
The route planner is reliable as long as the weather forecast is reliable and the boat speed is accurate. This last point in the case of a sailboat is probably the one that introduces maximum error because a sailboat rarely has a constant speed like a motorboat along a whole trip.Ok thanks

How can I delete a route after I've created it without having to go in and hit the x on every waypoint? I've tried hitting the x on the route planner pop-up, refreshing the page and then days later when I go to create a new route, the one from before is still there and I have to go through a tedious process to remove every step one by one. Please tell me there's an easier way! (using Brave browser on OSX)

Hi, I understand that processing different speeds for each waypoint is complex but, would it be possible one day for Windy to parse the date (by waypoint) of an imported GPX file and match the date (if it's in the interval) with the forecast/planner slider ?

Hey I have saved my trip route twice now as favourites, but I cannot for the life of me, find them in my favorites. Any tips??
-
@Kc-Malone nevermind I figured it out.
-
@Kc-Malone - that is exactly my issue right now, please confirm where to find the saved routes.
-
@Dobbs1
Your saved route should be at bottom of your list of Favorites. -
@NCSkies
Sorry for this late answer.
Please see these posts. -
A few years ago, it was possible to do this :
(starting at 3'50")
Uploading a boat routing in gpx and when hovering in the planner, the weather would update accordingly and the position on the route would be highlighted.
Is it still possible to do that ?
Thanks in advance. -
@Paspox
It is still possible to import a GPX file.
-> In menu select Distance & planning.
Then import your file, you will create a route with the Route planner features. -
@idefix37 - thanks for your response, but where are the favorites located?
-
@Dobbs1
To find your Favorites list, click on your profile picture. -
@idefix37 Thanks for your answer.
My question really is about having the weather in sync with the position on the route.
Once the gpx is loaded in the planner, when I move the mouse left/right (in the bottom part of the screen), I can see highlighted the corresponding waypoint in the route but the weather doesnt change, it doesnt sync with the date of that particular point on the route.
As seen on the video that I linked, it was possible in the past and I was wondering if it was still the case.
Maybe it is a premium feature only ?
Thanks, -
Please show a screenshot of the planning table. I guess the speed of the boat is not correctly enabled.

In the video link I posted above, starting at 3'50", you see the whole procedure.
The video is from 3 years ago so things might have changed but he doesn't need to select boat trip or to enter any boat speed, straight away, the weather and the points on the route are in sync.When I do it, I get this
The weather doesn't change as I move the mouse left to right.
If I do click on boat (which again was not needed in the video), and select a speed, the weather is in sync (but it's a premium feature). -
@Paspox
OK I see. This not the standard way of using the Route planner and I can’t say why it’s no longer work as it is shown in this video. Sorry. -
@idefix37 Too bad. Thanks anyway.

I made a test with a GPX file from the Uploader library in Windy.
I found 2 conditions to see the weather map changing with the boat position along the route.-
Set an average speed with the speed button ON
-
Click on the table at different time stamps. Not just grab the small grey panel.
In your case I suppose your file includes a variable speed calculated by the routing software.

@idefix37 Thanks a lot for looking into it !
I tried something different : importing my gpx file in the Flight planner plugin !!! and it kinda works : I do have to set an average speed which is not ideal but apart from that, the weather map changes with the position along the route.In the gpx file I'd like to display, for each point I have a timestamp and a position (lat/long). There is no speed in the file.
But you are right that if you were to calculate the speed, it would be highly variable, anywhere btw 0 and 30kts.
