How to use a route planner
-
@rittels I did, I added 5kn boat speed. Please have a look at the screenshot. The table does only show the conditions at the time of departure. But the conditions should change according to the boat speed, so I see the conditions when I'm at a specific location.

@viatormarine
First you must select North up.
Left to right as shown in your screen shot is used by aviation people and it is a projection of wind direction on an horizontal axis from left to right.
Then this table must show the weather that you will encounter along the route, not at the starting point. -
@idefix37 Unfortunately not, it has no effect on the table, except the wind direction.
-
@viatormarine
I have just made some tests and at the moment it seems that the Route planner has some issue ! -
@idefix37 Hello, what issue did you notice please?
-
@Korina
In this screenshot you see clearly that the wind direction and speed do not match the wind conditions in the map.At boat position there is a weak northerly wind, when the table shows a southerly wind of 15kt.
-
@idefix37 The routeplanner data represents data that extends from the middle of a time segment where you start. So if you start at 1200Z, or 1500Z (thus the middle of a 3 hour segment), it should be more accurate. (I think it is more accurate in premium. ) It would be interesting to test the accuracy, depending on the start hour.
-
@rittels
Here starting at 1600Z and with 1h forecast step, it does not improve anything.At boat position the wind is ENE, but shown as S wind in the Route planner.
-
@idefix37 Hello, I have reported the issue, we will look into it.
-
@Korina
Thank you !
That was the reason of the misunderstanding with @viatormarine until I checked the Route planner and see this recent issue. Up to now it was perfect. -
Now wind on map and on Route planner are matching again at 340NM on a 576NM trip.
Thanks to @marekd

Is there a way to use an uploaded .gpx route in the Distance & Planning feature of Windy? I can see the route on the map quite clearly when I upload it but the Distance & Planning feature does not seem to recognize it as the subject for which I would like meteorological data. Is there a way to connect these two features and make them work together?

@FairwaterMarine
Not yet, hope it will be possible in near future:

@idefix37 how to see VFR and IFR inside the APP on ipad please?
-
@ericdozi
Could you be more explicit in your question? I understand that you want to get the Route planner available in the mobile app, right?
You have seen in previous posts here above that this feature is only available with the browser version on desktop. With the mobile app (on tablets or mobile phones) you have only the Distance & planning tool.
You have posted 10 messages on the same subject within one hour. Are you trolling us? -
@ericdozi
With the mobile devices, using windy.com with browser, you can use the Flight planner plugin.

I'm not sure how helpful this is for VFR planning, though maybe I'm missing something.
-
When using the browser to click waypoints, is there a way to enter altitude?
-
Does entering the speed, simply apply linear calculation on distance regardless of wind?
Surely the real value would be if the speed entered is indicated (or true) airspeed of the airplane, and the time calculation incorporates wind speed to show actual distance vs time over ground. Cleary without knowing altitude, it can't be including it in the calcs, but not including it is pretty useless for VFR. 20kts of wind on a 100kt cruise speed, really matters if it is a headwind or tailwind!
What am I missing? I want to be wrong about this!

@xcapee Hello, the altitude and other data is displayed in the VFR view. Entering the speed gives you basic idea about the weather along the way, but it also gives you weather data for 'now', not for the time of arrival.
-
@korina
Hi Korina, pls could you explain what you mean with ‘’it also gives you weather data for 'now', not for the time of arrival’’.
For me Route planer shows weather that is predicted to be encountered along the trip i.e. weather at departure time / location and weather at arrival time / location, and same between these 2 points. Am I right? -
@idefix37 Hi, if you look at the route, the route planner shows forecast only for the current hour for the whole trip.
