Oh yes please, push notifications on mobile are something I'm missing for a long time. Hacking that with e-mail forwarding to SMS kind of works but is PITA!
I also thins some ideas in this thread would be useful:
- multiple independent notifications for the same place,
- warning about lightning in X km radius,
- multiple conditions which need to be fulfilled at once to issue warning.
Maybe you can even make a paid feature from notifications to SMS: That would work also for "dumb phones" once user sets it up in web interface.

Push notifications would be great. Plus being able to customize the alerts would be nice as well.

If alerts are driven by model data they will generally not be as good as those issued by the forecasters at weather services using local knowledge. This needs to be considered in the design as a matter of safety and for general user education. It could potentially have a legal liability aspect in some jurisdictions that should be considered.
It would be good to add some kind of advice on a risk acceptance page when creating an alert. Any generated alerts could include a link to the local weather service's alerts web page.

I would lijke to receive wind notification and thunderstor alerts. Wind speed over 15 kts from Easterly direction specifically and more than 25 kts from other directions in Lake Ontario and around Sarnia

Yes, I DO want push notifs to my phone.
Also... when I touch "home" (little house icon), I lose my zoomed-in view, and have to go from way out in space view back to the little spot I am watching! Please fix. Thanks!
