Tropical Storm Hagibis is strengthening and continues its approach to the Northern Mariana Islands. Could become a typhoon by Monday.
Hagibis formed as a tropical disturbance on Saturday, and quickly became a tropical depression on Saturday night. On Sunday morning, Hagibis was upgraded to a Tropical Storm. Hagibis could become a typhoon by Monday.
On October 5th at 6:00 p.m. UTC, Hagibis was located near 15.3N 157.8E, moving 270 degrees at 15 mph with maximum sustained winds of 35 kt, with higher gusts of 45 kt (JTWC Warning #3).
Hagibis is forecast to intensify the next few days. On its current track, Hagibis is forecast to pass through the Northern Mariana Islands late Monday or early Tuesday as a typhoon.
A typhoon watch is currently in effect for Alamagan Island. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for the rest of the Northern Mariana Islands, including Rota, Tinian, Saipan, Pagan and Agrihan.
