Thanks!
We had a high wind storm the other day here in the Eastern Aleutians. Eleven HOURS of 40-60 sustained wind and gusts as high as 132-140 hit Unalaska and nearby Akutan.
Fortunately my OptimEra Internet stayed up here in Unalaska so in between moving away from windows that were rippling and bulging and looked about to burst, I was able to look at Windy.com and see what was next up in the thrills/chills dept.
Was rather astonished to see so much detail of the storm was shown on Windy.com One way or another we all had been watching its progress as it headed our way - for days, so we had time to prepare.
What I found fascinating was the way the detail showed the complexity of the wind patterns including the lulls between the upcoming high speed gusts. They appeared as I finally figured out after one passed and the next arrived, in slightly different color blobs.
THAT helped me predict the degree of 'hit' my home would get and where to move to incase any windows broke.
Just wanted to thank all the Windy.com folks for helping us here stay SO INFORMED by being able to SEE SO CLEARLY what was about to & what had occurred.
Being able to compare the forecast with real time on the ground experience was boggling.
THANKS :) !!!!!

RE: Windy 3D mode is back!
@wedda Actually there IS an advantage to having the Globe view i.e. 3D mode in addition to the Flat Earth view. 3D allows us to to observe POLAR and CIRCUM-polar weather and atmospheric situations in a 'more realistic' manner than the Flat Earth view... and to SEE WHERE Everything on Earth interconnects.
Here's an interesting example of how/why this is both interesting and important: Shortly before Windy.com went to the Flat Earth form, I was able to observe - pretty close to real time... the wind blowing north from Europe, up over Scandinavia, over Greenland, over Canada & Alaska and actually drop down on the Bering Sea where I live... not only was that interesting - from a global perspective, a Technological ACHIEVEMENT and a computer programming success as well, BUT the next day a European BIRD (Eurasian Bullfinch) was spotted here probably having been lofted and carried by that polar wind! That species has been seen here before (2x that I know of) but only having arrived via the winds that carried it from the Mediterranean, over Central Asia, China, Siberia etc., and then via typhoon winds, here.
OK, so it's a bird. Well, there are other reasons for wanting to see and understand planet wide circulation of air and water. Obviously: Forest Fire Smoke, Radioactive Plumes, Volcanic ash, Shipping and transportation AEROSOLS, INSECT migrations... the list is pretty endless... and it's kinda important to WANT to see this so as to learn how and where to reduce our negative effect on the ONLY planet we depend on :)
It's pretty much a 'connect the dots' thing. 'This is like this - because, That is like that.'
Other practical and philosophical reasons for wanting to keep 3D views: We all live IN the same Space Ship and being able to use Windy 3D to observe the interconnections is not just a 'fun' activity and 'diversion' but is essential to understanding, learning and teaching ourselves that we ALL are literally in the same little blue planet boat.
It's make it work time NOW, for ALL of humanity. We can't call Jean Luc-Picard to give us directions so as to save the ship... we COLLECTIVELY gotta figure it out and work at it.
WINDY.COM and 3D view IS ONE VAST and AMAZING TOOL that can help! :)
And, yeah... there are computer bugs to work out... like retaining the settings between Flat Earth 2D and Globe-Earth 3D... so give the developers a chance to work it out and add to the marvel that Windy.com and it's 3d view really is.
:)

RE: Windy 3D mode is back!
Very glad to have 3D back. Where I live in Alaska, having the ability to rotate the globe helps when tracking storms that potentially bring errant species of birds to the Aleutians over the pole and over Canada and Siberia.
THANKS !

RE: Windy launches Satellite layer
Astonishing! I am sitting here looking at the satellite's virtually LIVE view of the planet & out the window at the 'real' world of the Aleutian Islands and It's super interesting to see how the two 'realities' mesh. I should not be amazed but honestly > Windy folks!!! >> You have achieved that rarefied level of 'really awesome'.
The Sun is shining thru the cloud cover onto the nearby hillside and the snow squalls are marching across the mountains on the other side of the Bay.
What I'm gonna look for next in this Sat view is our local Volcanos outbursts and see if they get imaged too. THAT will be amazing.
Thanks!

Volcanic Ash Tracking
- Wondering if there is a category/layer in Windy that tracks Volcano Ash.
I've tried the Dust layer and that kinda helps a bit but not really. Given the numbers of active Volcanoes spewing ash & also various volatile gases... well, just curious.
AND -
- Is there a way to have two layers working at the same time for comparing info?
Oh, and - the S02 layer is awesome!!! SEE the attached Images which explain my comments below
While that layer doesn't help much with tracking Volcanic ash... IT DOES SHOW CLEARLY the track of the Great Circle Route Cargo Ships that travel between the West Coast of the US and Canada thru the southern portion of the Bering Sea north of the Aleutians where I live and Japan. COMPARE that with the MarineTraffic.com live ship tracking and you can see that these ships MUST scrub their stacks better... while not exactly part of the decarbonization Ivo Speaks of... it would help to control Ocean Acidification. As for decarbonization... less ship traffic OR SHIPS that USE more refined fuels, might help with Air Quality issues on the planet. AND worldwide: we need to grow & produce locally etc....

RE: Windy predicts extreme wind, temperature and rain
Please - lets repeat all together > THANKS Windy.com TEAM!!! This IS the all time best weather site on the planet. Wow!
And, the Planet thanks you too for alerting humans to it's plight.
Now, if we'd only listen to Mother Earth...

RE: THANKS :) Time Zone Corrected
Still wondering if there is any way to correct our Time zone. It seemed to have been 'fixed' but then reverted BACK to the wrong time. I understand that you use software from another site but perhaps you could switch to this one: https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/usa/unalaska
it appears to show correct time all over the planet.

RE: Where is 3D globe?
Wonderful - Thanks for not forgetting about working on the 3-D Globe!!! It really makes more sense to see our world that way... especially if you want to see how the weather systems form and move around.
And - Please - don't forget about correcting the time zones for Alaska... Here's one that works correctly... http://www.worldtimeserver.com/current_time_in_US-AK.aspx
And - again - many thanks for this site. It really is interesting
-
THANKS :) Time Zone Corrected
MANY THANKS for the time zone correction for the Eastern Aleutians of Alaska including Unalaska Island. :)

Time Zone Issue
Hi - we seem to have lost our correct time zone on the site.
We are located 53°52'N / 166°32'W so are in Alaska Standard Time -9 UTC.
Adak which you show as our time zone is 400 MILES WEST of us so is indeed -10.
- Here's a site that shows the correct time zone for our location: etc. https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/usa/unalaska
Thanks :)

RE: Dust Forecasting
I concur. Can't always tell from the wind direction the extent and volume of dust in the air.

RE: Windytv does not work with AdBlock properly! - disable IT!!!!!
I use AdBlock and have no problem. What aspects of WindyTv are being blocked?
As far as I am aware none of my WTV is blocked.
Isn't it the individual user's settings that establish what AdBlock blocks?

THANKS! Default opening location choice works again
Thanks for setting up the 'default' opening location choice again - it works nicely. :)
-
RE: Default opening location confusion.
@ivo Thanks for the reply - look fwd to that default opening @ my location :)
And PLEASE consider adding VOLCANIC ASH CLOUDS to your overlays. (The old girl doesn't ask for much does she :)
- I have a suggestion concerning a larger communications issue amongst us all > which may in part explain why that choice I made for default location (set my home location) was not used by many people and perhaps why you get certain kinds of 'dumb' questions.
WILL POST IN A NEW TOPIC: COMMUNICATION - CONFUSION - CLARIFICATION.
Again - thanks

Default opening location confusion.

How do I set A Default Opening View for my WindyTv?
It used to open automatically to my specific geographical location.
Today it seems to want to center me in the Middle of the US. -
I set some 'Favorite' places yesterday - did that affect my default location?
Thanks :)
-
-
Like it!
Re: Snow depth forecast - Like the overlay! Unfortunately it doesn't look like we are gonna get any meaningful snow for a while. Can you do something about that? :) Thanks again!
-
RE: All your favourites on one page. Sync all on cloud!
Ivo - IT WORKS! Live avatar and log-in is awesome!!! AWESOME!!!!! Thanks. But I NEED basic ASSISTANCE PLEASE -
- HOW DO I SET UP A FAVOURITE in the first place?
Can't find a step by step way to do it. Have tried everything I can think of.
Help :)
-
CLEAR, STEP BY STEP instructions NEEDED - Please
The more complex this gets – THE MORE AWESOME BUT it is becoming MORE difficult TO PERSONALIZE FOR TWO REASONS:
1 - CLEAR, STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS ARE LACKING - at least - I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND ANY!
2 - SETTINGS DO NOT SEEM TO 'stick'. Sometimes they are there, other times - not. NO CLUE WHY!Example: Am trying to set Favorites - cannot figure out how to it! OR perhaps the function is not working? No way for me to tell. THIS IS VERY FRUSTRATING.
(I know where the little FAV 'x' is but cannot drag/drop to Fav Location - IF THAT IS THE LOGICAL WAY TO DO IT) (Using most recent Chrome, have high speed reliable connection & 4K monitors - so no issues there)
TO REITERATE:
*Are there CLEAR, STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS on how to SET Favorites & other PERSONALIZATIONS - IF SO - WHERE ARE THEY?
FIX SUGGESTION:
***DEVELOP an INSTRUCTION SECTION
BOTH VERSIONS NEED CLEAR, STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS
PLEASE DO NOT MAKE ASSUMPTIONS THAT EVERYONE KNOWS how to do everything. WE DON'T.
Again – MANY, THANKS for developing this. Have learned a LOT about the weather etc…

Please add back the old style "Polar Rotation View" capabiltiy
Prior version was more like the Google Earth "Round" i.e. CIRCULAR ROTATIONAL VIEW. Provided a 'look down' at the planet from a North POLAR VIEW or a 'look up' from the South Pole.
This testing version SEEMS TO BE an "Equatorial - Swipe" style. REALLY DON'T LIKE it. Too linear & constricting. Does really show HOW the Polar Cells generate weather and how it flows around the planet. (Sorry - don't have the meteorological terms) The Planet is 'circular' in a dimensional sense & not flat, linear like a cell phone screen :) Or, hmmm... maybe the Flat Earth Society is right.
Maybe for those with small cell phones etc the 'swipe' is helpful but for those of us using large monitors or larger tablets etc it is an impediment to the over-all view of 'reality' :)
Using the Circular - Rotational POLAR VIEW view those of us in higher Latitudes (for example) can rotate the planet 'under us' - which means we can LINE UP THE LONGITUDE grid for a more realistic view of our locations and weather pattern ANGLES of approach.
Have attached a screenshot from the non-Beta WTV which shows how I can position the North Pole and swing planet around so as to place the Aleutian Islands for example - in a more realistic location and thereby SEE the way the wind really IS hitting the Island. MAKES a lot more sense to me to see it this way.
While I may intellectually KNOW the wind is hitting from the SE (and can feel it slam into the house) to SEE it this way on the screen - MAKES it MAKE more SENSE.
What I am trying to say is - I can look at my monitor, line up NORTH to MY north and SOUTH to MY south and then compare with the wind or snow or rain or whatever is showing on the screen.
That presents me with a greater scope of comprehension of HOW the weather flows past where I live and how where I live - affects the wind patterns elsewhere. I'm using WindyTV as a tool for understanding weather and how Birds (for example) function in it. Knowing which way the wind will flow, what the air pressure is or will be etc., gives me a heads up for tracking Eagles and Ravens and other birds here. Also helps keep track of winter storms hitting the beaches etc., and what the 'micro-climate wind' may pick up stuff and blow it around or...
This is an AWESOME TOOL! Have learned a LOT by using it. I am boggled at the detail you have in this Beta Version!
REALLY Hope having a "POLAR VIEW" - a rotational view instead of just a swipe view is possible.
Thanks
