I was wondering the same thing. That object blocking the waves East of the South Orkney Islands is very big, as as far as I can tell, there's nothing as big in that position.
A23a is between South Georgia and Elephant Island. Several cruise ships are stopping by to see it.

@WharfRat - I totally agree. Some of us are very visual, and having a graph visualization is very helpful.
I use the UK EasyTide as my reference when working in the Antarctic, and it works most times.

      • I think the Amazon River Basin will provide unique challenges. There is an annual variation that can be bigger than 10m at Manaus, plus daily tidal variation that can be noticed all the way to Óbidos (800 nm from ocean). Then the rivers on the North bank have their flood in Spring, while rivers from South Bank have theirs in Fall. There are tide gauges in all main cities.

      @Gkikas-LGPZ I don't buy it.
Sea ice edge is much further south. See the ice map from met.no

Sea ice. Frozen salted (sea) water that floated there because of the extremely cold atmospheric conditions in the area. Sea ice is not thick like icebergs and melted.
As ECMWF describes .... "Sea ice is frozen sea water which floats on the surface of the ocean. Sea ice does not include ice which forms on land such as glaciers, icebergs and ice-sheets. It also excludes ice shelves which are anchored on land, but protrude out over the surface of the ocean. These phenomena are not modelled by the IFS

There is no sea ice in that position east of South Orkeneys, according to the latest Ice Chart by met.no
Sea ice normally shows on Windy as grey, with no indications of wave at all.

Thanks Idefix for the patronizing explanation about the difference between icebergs and sea ice. Armchair travelers like yourself must have a hard time telling one from the other.

Only a very large and tall object like A23a would cause similar wave shadow.

Adding the ice chart that shows the ice edge is further south.

Thanks Gkykas for seeing what is quite clear on Albatros original post.![alt text](![image url](![image url](![image url](![image url](![image url](peninsula_20250120.png image url)))))).

The ECMWF model positions A23a further south than the 60th parallel while the satellite displays it at latitude 56°S.

But I don’t see the anomaly in Waves layer by ECMWF that you were showing in your first screenshot.

So ECMWF has the Iceberg on the wrong position, East of South Orkney, where the anomaly appears on Albatros posting.

@Gkikas-LGPZ that is exactly what Albatros said. That the model shows the disturbance caused by A23a further south than it is. GFS seems to show the Iceberg impact on waves.

It looks like you are mistaking South Orkney island with South Georgia.
A23a is between South Georgia and South Orkney, closer to South Georgia. The satellite layer you posted has its correct position.
But the disturbance seen by Albatros is much further south, East of South Orkney. I had noticed it myself.
If the position of such large object is showing on the weather map so far away from its actual position, can we trust the accuracy of the position where the storms are?
