    • RE: The easiest way to check the weather!

      It depends on what information you want. For the average "guy off the street" I don't think Windy is the particularly easy to use. They just want to see:

      • What the current temperature is
      • What the predicted high and low temperature is
      • Whether and when it is going to rain or snow today

      Windy makes that somewhat hard to find. As I posted in a thread yesterday, you have to drill down a bit to find this.

      However, for a weather enthusiast, Windy is quite easy to use to use. I find the interface fantastic for digging into what is going to be happening.

      I realize there is supposed to be a popup in the upper left that shows a quick 3 day forecast, but I find it doesn't always display for me despite having that option checked. The Quick Forecast also only shows highs whether it will rain sometime that day. That is not quite enough information in my opinion. By clicking it you get the more detailed display, but that is probably more than most people want.

      Not every site is going to be all things to all people. The Windy developers have obviously focused more on the "enthusiasts". That is a fine decision but I suspect it means that the bulk of the population will not choose Windy as their "go to " weather site.

    • Easier way to see current temperature?

      Windy is an amazing web app. However, I wish it were easier to see the current reported temperatures (and other conditions) and nearby weather stations. Right now there seem to be two options.

      1. Display the forecast for your location by clicking the down arrow in the weather picker. Then you must scroll the forecast to the right to see the nearby weather stations. Most of them are unnamed, so it is not clear which one I want to choose.

      2. Alternatively I can choose the "Reported temperature" layer and then zoom in multiple times to see the various station near me. That will let me see the temp, but to see the details, I need to click the actual station to display the details panel at the bottom.

      Given that lots of folks care about the current weather (in addition to the forecasted weather), I think it would be nice to have an option to quickly display the details of the stations around me.

      Perhaps you can designate a single station as you location's station and its current conditions easily.

      Am I missing something?

    • RE: Dew point - need specific numbers

      You can also just click or tap anywhere on the map and an onscreen indicator is displayed showing the parameter value at that location.

    • RE: Easier way to see current temperature?

      Tom,

      Thanks for the response. I realize Windy is not your typical weather site, but one common use of weather sites must be to see the current conditions before heading out the door. I will watch for further development along these lines.

      Do you see a small “particles animation” switch in the bottom right of the chart? That needs to be turned on.

    • RE: Why 5 Models: Most current?

      @jame5
      The most current model will not always be the best. You need to pay attention to see which tends to give the most accurate forecast for your area.

      If you click one of the weather station near you, there is an option to show "Observation vs forecast". This will indicate which model is providing the most accurate forecast for that area.

    • RE: Is there a key or explanation to decoding the "meteogram" view?

      Yes, I have looked at the cloud layers. At 9 PM, it is showing 35% high clouds and 23% medium clouds. That was why I was surprised to not see them in the meteogram.

      @Dauphinsky I don’t generally use this feature, but playing around with it, it seems there is no data available anywhere there are no clouds. That makes sense to me although perhaps it could be worded better.

    • Height of Geopotential Height

      I'm hoping I'm missing something, but it seems that showing the 500mb Geopotental Height is somewhat clunky.

      Right now I:

      • Go to "More layers"
      • Scroll down and turn on "Geopot. height" under Display isoclines
      • Select the Wind layer.
      • Adjust the slider to show the wind at the 500mb level. The has the side effect of adjusting the Geopotential height isoclines to also be for 500mb.

      Then when I'm done I need to reverse those operations.

      Is there a more straightforward way to do this that I'm missing?

    • RE: Cross Hair forecast

      Interesting. I find that top bar on the mobile web site to be quite useful.

      • It is a quick way to know the forecast at a point without trying to interpolate the colors.
      • It allows you to see what model is being used. Since Windy changes the model behind your back, this is useful to me.
      • It provides buttons to bring up the forecast at a point and to show the sounding there.

      I don’t care whether they provide an option to disable it, but I find it very useful.

    • Something wrong with cloud forecast

      Not sure what the best way to report this is, but something is wrong with the cloud forecast for Longmont, CO, USA. It has been mostly cloudy all day but most of your forecasts show it mostly clear.

      8f82e1ab-cd01-4453-b9ed-2ec0b26b4978-image.png

      Only Meteoblue has showed it cloudy today.

      I finally looked at 3 or 4 other forecast sites that have ICON and HRRR forecasts and they have been showing it mostly cloudy during the same periods where Windy has it clear.

      Not sure what could be wrong but it is almost like Windy is pulling the wrong data. I have only noticed this with the cloud forecast (I'm and astronomer so I pay close attention to that). I haven't paid close attention to the other forecast parameters

    • RE: 3hr / 1 hr forecast no longer remembered?

      @Suty
      It just happened to me again. I've been on the 1 hr forecast setting for the past 6 days. I just visited Windy from my iPad and I was logged out. After logging back in I saw I was on the 3 hour forecast. I looked in the settings and the "Remember 1hr/3hr setting" was no longer checked. I checked it.

      I then tried Windy on a Mac and I was still logged in there. However, the "Remember 1hr/3hr setting" was no longer checked there. perhaps not enough time past to sync with the iPad settings. This gives me the 3 hr forecast.

      @Suty
      Well it is working for the time being. The problem is that this setting is being turned off by something (not by me). It may be when a new web version is released or it could be when i get logged off occasionally.

      I am running on iPadOS and it could be Safari there is periodically deleting cookies for some reason. That could also explain the periodic logouts.

      I will keep a watch on it and see if I can discern a pattern.

      In my case, yes I had I turned on. However, it got turned off again by either an update or possibly by my being logged out and logging in again.

      @Suty
      No, it just happens once after the update. It’s like the name of the setting has been changed so the app doesn’t find to old one and uses the default.

    • 3hr / 1 hr forecast no longer remembered?

      I noticed that with the latest 47.1.4 build, the 1hr/3hr setting for the point forecasts is no longer remembered between visits. I then thought to check my settings and saw the "Remember 1hr/3hr setting" had become unchecked. This is the second time the setting was lost after an update.

      Is this by design? Are you trying to get people to use the 3 hr forecast because it is less resource intensive. It would be nice if this didn't change behind our backs.

    • RE: Time for latest satellite image not accurate

      I agree the last image is the most recent. The problem is you imply that is the image from "now" when in reality it is the image from 20 or so minutes ago. You obviously know when the image was captured because you don't show the previous image until you have backed up for 20 minutes.

      Just show the correct time the image is from.

    • Time for latest satellite image not accurate

      This may be a minor point, but it bugs me. In the desktop version, when you first display the satellite view, the time slider is all the way to the right. It generally says something like "16:44 - 0 min ago".

      However that is not the image from 0 minutes ago. If you back up in time, that same image is displayed until you get to around 20 minutes ago. If you continue to back up, to (say) 25 minutes ago, you get a new image. So the displayed image was taken 20 minutes ago, not 0 minutes ago.

      I don't fault you for not having an image from 1 or 2 minutes ago. The weather service takes a while to generate these, and then you need to process them. However, I wish you would just be honest and when the slider is to the right, say "20 minutes ago", which is when the image is really from.

      Note that this is in the US using EUMETSAT. Maybe it is different in other parts of the world.
