    • RE: The easiest way to check the weather!

It depends on what information you want. For the average "guy off the street" I don't think Windy is the particularly easy to use. They just want to see:

      • What the current temperature is
      • What the predicted high and low temperature is
      • Whether and when it is going to rain or snow today

Windy makes that somewhat hard to find. As I posted in a thread yesterday, you have to drill down a bit to find this.

However, for a weather enthusiast, Windy is quite easy to use to use. I find the interface fantastic for digging into what is going to be happening.

I realize there is supposed to be a popup in the upper left that shows a quick 3 day forecast, but I find it doesn't always display for me despite having that option checked. The Quick Forecast also only shows highs whether it will rain sometime that day. That is not quite enough information in my opinion. By clicking it you get the more detailed display, but that is probably more than most people want.

Not every site is going to be all things to all people. The Windy developers have obviously focused more on the "enthusiasts". That is a fine decision but I suspect it means that the bulk of the population will not choose Windy as their "go to " weather site.

    • RE: Dew point - need specific numbers

You can also just click or tap anywhere on the map and an onscreen indicator is displayed showing the parameter value at that location.

    • Easier way to see current temperature?

Windy is an amazing web app. However, I wish it were easier to see the current reported temperatures (and other conditions) and nearby weather stations. Right now there seem to be two options.

      1. Display the forecast for your location by clicking the down arrow in the weather picker. Then you must scroll the forecast to the right to see the nearby weather stations. Most of them are unnamed, so it is not clear which one I want to choose.

      2. Alternatively I can choose the "Reported temperature" layer and then zoom in multiple times to see the various station near me. That will let me see the temp, but to see the details, I need to click the actual station to display the details panel at the bottom.

Given that lots of folks care about the current weather (in addition to the forecasted weather), I think it would be nice to have an option to quickly display the details of the stations around me.

Perhaps you can designate a single station as you location's station and its current conditions easily.

      Am I missing something?

Do you see a small “particles animation” switch in the bottom right of the chart? That needs to be turned on.

    • RE: Is there a key or explanation to decoding the "meteogram" view?

Yes, I have looked at the cloud layers. At 9 PM, it is showing 35% high clouds and 23% medium clouds. That was why I was surprised to not see them in the meteogram.

    • RE: Easier way to see current temperature?

      Tom,

Thanks for the response. I realize Windy is not your typical weather site, but one common use of weather sites must be to see the current conditions before heading out the door. I will watch for further development along these lines.

    • RE: Forecasted values on map change depending on zoom level

Thanks, I just read though the other reports of it.

If this is not a bug, it is at least a suboptimal design. Surely you would not want this to happen if it could be avoided. I never know what the actual value is and thus cannot fully trust the map reading other than to give a sort of estimate.

It does sound like it is due to some sort of averaging over an area. I guess the point value for that location is not readily available.

I will also say in Windy's defense that in practice it probably doesn't make any difference. Surely the error bars on most of the forecasted values are as large or larger than the variability while zooming. It just offends my engineering sense of precision.

    • RE: Windy launches Satellite layer

The satellite layer is much appreciated.

There is probably nothing you can do about it, and it is probably in the source data coming from EUMETSAT, but there is an annoying discontinuity running through the central US.

It kind of degrades the beautiful image. If there is anything that can be done about it I'd appreciate you looking at it at some point.

@kiwiandy, check to make sure you still have “forecasted weather” selected on the “layers” selector in the bottom right corner.

    • RE: Location direction

I'm not totally sure what that arrow is supposed to represent but I don't think it is the direction you are facing. For me it always points north and doesn't change. I suspected it was the direction you are moving in (useful for storm chasers) but it also doesn't seem to change as I move in a particular direction.

    • RE: Forecasted values on map change depending on zoom level

Thanks for the additional info. Possibly I’m starting to understand the issue. When viewing the map while zoomed out, is the grib file sent to the app at a lower resolution? If the grib file’s resolution varies with the map zoom level then I can totally see how the interpolation between points can change with zoom.

    • Forecasted values on map change depending on zoom level

I've noticed that the forecasted values displayed on the maps will change as you zoom in or out. For temperature it may only be a couple of degrees. However, for cloud coverage, it can change by 10% (coverage) or more.

What is happening here? The only thing I can think of is that the app is sampling a region around the location and as you zoom in and out the region size changes.

I addition, when you change the zoom level, the value is initially way off and then after a second our two it corrects itself to the value that changes somewhat with the zoom level.
