Wouldn't it be cool if the beautiful world maps could be available as a dynamic desktop? I don't know how it's done on Windows, but on a Mac a dynamic desktop image is possible by simply replacing an image in a folder.

So..., if there was an HTTP API for retrieving a current rendered map, then it would be trivial to write a shell script that grabbed the map every hour.

I took a quick look under the hood at the DOM to see if there was an image layer with a corresponding URL, but no luck. Is this possible?
