Hi Windy community,
I've built a plugin that adds Japan's GIS topographic map (国土地理院地図) as a layer on top of Windy. If you do hiking, trail running, or cycling
in Japan, this is a much more detailed and accurate map than the default outdoor layer.
What it does
- At zoom ≥ 10: replaces the default outdoor map with the GSI pale topo map, which shows elevation contours, trails, mountain huts, and terrain detail specific
to Japan - At zoom < 10: Windy's default view is shown unchanged, so weather overlays work normally
- Opacity is adjustable from the plugin panel
- Works on both desktop and mobile
Tile source
Data comes from 国土地理院 (Geospatial Information Authority of Japan) — the official Japanese government mapping agency. Freely available under their standard
usage terms.

Load it via Windy developer mode → paste the URL above, then navigate to windy.com/gsi-bvmap.
