For iPad, the direction pointer shown on the map - that indicates the direction that the user is facing - only points in the correct direction/compass bearing when the iPad is held in PORTRAIT orientation.
When the iPad is oriented in LANDSCAPE orientation (as is unavoidable when using a folio or other attached keyboard with iPad, the pointer is rotated +90 degrees from the correct bearing.
By example, with the iPad in Landscape orientation:
-
When facing DUE NORTH (i.e., 0 degrees), the map pointer will point EAST (i.e., 90 degrees).
-
When facing EAST (i.e., +90 degrees from North), the map pointer will point SOUTH (i.e., 180 degrees).
-
When facing SOUTH (i.e., +180 degrees from North), the map pointer will point WEST (i.e., 270 degrees).
