For some time, the plugins are available in mobile apps also.

We’re working hard to implement a new mapping library for Windy. The new library combines MapLibre GL JS and Leaflet, bringing together the advantages of WebGL performance with Leaflet’s rich ecosystem and easy-to-use API. We’re calling the new library leaflet-gl.

The library abandons legacy Leaflet constructors, so please update your code accordingly. If you are a plugin developer, please update your constructors as well.

We expect to launch this new library around January/February 2026.

Legacy constructors (to be removed):

Dear developer

After a long time, we had some time to tweak our system for external developers.

Important changes:

• Very soon, list of installed plugins will be synced in between your devices (and also saved on the cloud). This also means, that external plugins can be accessible only by registered user.

• New version of Windy, that should be released till end of 2026 will finally enable to use external plugins on mobile devices also in iOS and Android App. To meet strict privacy requirements of Windy.com, Apple and Google, only published and approved plugins will be enabled.

• We are internally developing new WebGl mapping library for Windy, that will replace legacy Leaflet. But do not worry. This library should have Leaflet compatible API, so you should be able to convert your plugin in no time.

There is no content im embedded DIV and after closing the plugin the items remain in the map

@Suty heliports that report METAR stay on all the time

@vicb Docs repo is very complicated since it uses automatically exported docs from client codes

So there is a lot of scripts etc.

It is hosted in our gitlab and I will ask about access

• Sounding and skew-T diagram is part of core Windy functionality for a long time. If alternative sounding plugin will not appear we can enhance our core sounding to match its functionality
• Expert mode is now DEFAULT (you do not need to activate it)
• New plugin system is state of the art and is NOT compatible with old system. It can not be compared to old system which was barely usable.
• We gave 2 months for plugin developers to rewrite their plugins.

In march 2024 we have launched new major version of Windy (version 42), with new plugin system.

Unfortunately we do not have any GUI for plugin submission.

Just shout out URL of your plugin and we will make the rest

Closing the thread

After enormous pressure from Windy users, we have decided to give Windy Plugin system one more try.

I will refactor Windy Plugin system, to new and modern technologies (Typescript, Svelte and ES modules).

But privacy issues still remain.

In order to solve them we have to see source codes, before any plugin will be offered to other users.

The best options is, that plugins are hosted on GitHub, and other plugin developers can see them also as inspiration.

If you are plugin developer let us know here in this thread.

If you want to keep plugin alive I would recommend make it official and internal Windy plugin

Guys if you want to keep Traj plugin working, that we would need to look at source codes somehow.

GitHub repository of Traj plugin is empty.

This is ONE OF THE REASONS we want to abandon external plugins program. There is 3rd party code in users browser and we can not check its source codes.
