A slightly different usage that I'm more familiar with is to understand building energy consumption in relations to weather, for instance for electricity demand prediction and building energy simulation. Weather is such a big driver in this area that without historical weather data, it would be very difficult to plan and design critical infrastructures (buildings, electricity grid) that we all depend on.

Hi @petra-pik - I don't know if this is appropriate place to mention but I run a weather data API (https://oikolab.com) primarily focused on historical reanalysis data (based on ERA5) for location-specific lookup. There seems to be consistent requests for historical data on this forum and I'm wondering if there might be a way to collaborate somehow? This would help researchers such as @SophieBehrendsen and others.
