In the past few days, I’ve noticed something unusual with rainfall patterns on radar images. At the outer edge of the radar range circles, the displayed rainfall often looks either more intense or less than expected.
For example, this was visible recently on the radar near Amsterdam, and a couple of days earlier on the one covering southwest England.
In the second case, the radar suggested heavier rain than what was actually happening at ground level. Perhaps precipitation was forming aloft but evaporating before it reached the surface?
