State as of app version 41.2.3 is that this workaround doesn't work unfortunately.

Setting to start from the last overlay does not make the app start with the last weather model for me. It’s ECMWF every time, and I have to switch to MBLUE every time, as that's the most accurate one for my area. I am opening the app via app icon, not the widget.

Same, best weather prediction in Munich, Germany!

Or just let users set default startup models.
