We tried to update Windy into
leaflet-1.3.4. Unfortunately there were serious performance issues. We are investigating any other possibilities how to not stay stuck in old leaflet version.

RE: City names displayed incorrect
thank you for reporting. We took a look at that and it seems there is no error. It can be confusing because names are different in a map with higher zoom. We use OSM database for generating windy map and also labels, but a map, which is displayed in higher zoom, is generated a different way.
There are two possibilities which may cause these inconsistencies:
- romanian names have been added into OSM database after we generated labels,
- or romanian names are still missing in OSM database.
Feel free to fix it:
We are going to generate labels and map in next weeks, so you can help us to fix it in the next version :-) Thank you!
RE: I would love to donate
@kdiamond1 Unfortunately it is not possible. As a company we need to pay taxes even for donations. And it is quite complicated when you want to take donation all around the world (then we must pay taxes in countries from which donations came from). And it is impossible to handle it on our own. So 30% for Apple or Google is quite a lot, but just for now it is our only option.
Windy API v4 - 18.5.0-rc public test
We are about to publish new API library. Help us with testing! This is first publicly testable version and it is probably very buggy. Feel free to report all errors in this thread.
- implements the latest Windy client
iconmodels to paid version
capeoverlays to paid version
- fix fallbacks to default model when leaving covered area
- fix data loading errors
- fix uncountable amount of minor and major bugs
How to join public test
libBoot.jslibrary you already use in your website from this new URL:
That is all. Do you miss anything? Let us know in this thread. Welcome to our testers group and thanks!
- implements the latest Windy client
RE: 11 overlays not working with paid version
you are right, these overlays do not work. That is because:
- radar is a composit from many sources and we have no rights to give that data to third parties,
- thunder, deg0, cloudtop, cbase, visibility, swell3, snowcover and cape are based on ECMWF data model which we unfortunately cannot give to third parties as well,
- sst and ozone are not provided probably by mistake, we will look at that and will let you know in this thread.
We are really sorry to make you confused by our documentation. We will fix it as soon as possible to prevent this misunderstanding in the future.
RE: possible to add own model data to local instance?
@cplist Windy itself is a leaflet plugin. And there is boat tracker tutorial (https://api4.windy.com/examples/boat-tracker/) where you can see how to add leaflet polylines, leaflet icons. In other tutorials you can see also leaflet popups... And you can also add leaflet layers (you are right there is currently no tutorial for that, sorry). I am not able to say if it works with leaflet-velocity, but you should try it. It probably will work.
RE: 5-Day Forecast
Windy API provides "only" our Leaflet extensions and map tools. It allows you to use Windy map layers and read its data. Forecast is not part of the API, unfortunately. But we would like to provide more our services via API in the future (forecast, of course, would be part of that). But at this moment, we are not able to tell when and if ever it will be.
RE: Can I get Thunderstorms data by using Windy API?
You cannot do that using API, sorry. Windy API provides "only" our Leaflet extensions and map tools. It allows you to use Windy map layers and read its data. It's similar to, for example, Google Maps. You can use their API and their maps, enhanced them with whatever you need or want, but you cannot get new villages (or whatever) and when they appeared.
RE: Strange place names in Android widget
@jfmoyen @idefix37 Thank you both for your great help. We are working on fix, but it will probably take us some time. We are currently working on a huge refactor around georeverse searching and also geo searching. This bug can be fixed after realeasing these changes. Thank you again for your help and understanding.
RE: Embedding Windy into your own website
@LukeB101 It is not possible right now through the API, sorry. Windy API provides "only" our Leaflet extensions and map tools. It allows you to use Windy map layers and read its data. Airports info is not a part of that. We are sorry. Maybe in the future it will be possible :-)
