Thanks for this! I am unable to pull up the satellite archive on desktop, any thoughts on how to resolve this issue, or is it a new update coming out soon? My settings show I am running version 37.2.5 in Microsoft Edge on Windows 10. Additionally, will this be added to the iOS version?

Finally, a shameless plug that I'd still love to see total precipitable water added as one of the offered parameters. It would be very useful for forecasting atmospheric river events and spring thunderstorms in my region.

Hello WIndy team! NOAA is planning on launching a new weather model (RRFS) to replace both the HRRR and NAM late 2023. It is operating provisionally so far with a domain that covers the dame domain as the HRRR, but once it is operational the domain is expected to cover all of North America.

Is Windy planning on switching mesoscale modeling in North America from the HRRR and NAM, which will likely be sunset after the RRFS launches, to this new model? I am hoping so. This would also be a win for Canadian, Latin American, and Caribbean users.

@Ondřej-Šutera Adding my support for total precipitable water. I would find this to be incredibly useful.

The new updates are, as always, great and add a lot of value to Windy. I'm once again asking you to add total precipitable water as one of the parameters offered for display. It's a great way to visualize moisture plumes and whatnot, such as this one later this week where moisture sourced from the Caribbean will be bringing rain to Norway and the United Kingdom.

This sort of thing is critical for severe weather and atmospheric river forecasting and the current humidity and precipitation parameters don't capture it as well as total precipitable water does.

I love Windy and find it very useful for my forecasting. It is missing a very important parameter, however, which is total precipitable water. This measures atmospheric moisture content throughout the entire column instead of at specific altitudes, as in RH and dew point and is helpful in tracking impacts from atmospheric rivers, decaying tropical systems, etc.

Most models have this parameter included in their output dataset. Please consider adding it to Windy to improve the usefulness of the product to meteorologists.

@Annual-Salvador-Rally The colors represent the strength of the parameter (wind, waves, etc.) same as on the map.

@anthony10 GeoColor is the name of the parameter in AWIPS, so I assume that's what an API call would require. I'd love the night time microphysics display to be an option too since I live in a region with frequent low stratus and fog but GeoColor is a higher priority for me.

@anthony10 I strongly agree that Windy should switch to the GeoColor satellite product for visible imagery instead of what they use currently.

@russdoty11 The data source Windy uses for weather radar does not include that information. That level of data is quite a bit more expensive, both to obtain and also to process and handle within the system.

@Canli You could use the high-resolution model (NAM), but the global models will continue to handle this poorly because they don't resolve that low spot from Kahului to Maalaea very well. The NAM will still struggle, but will be better than the other models.

Unfortunately there aren't many high-resolution options available for Hawaii in general even if Windy were interested in pulling in another source.

As for getting an actual weather station in the bay, you would likely need to somehow convince NOAA to place a buoy out there. Onshore MADIS stations P36, 005HE, and KPDH1 may be helpful. I thought Windy pulled in MADIS already so I'm not sure why these don't show up.

@vujacicm The SE United States benefits from dense vegetation which adds additional moisture due to evapotranspiration. Italy does get pretty moist thunderstorms during the summer as moist air comes onshore, similar to Florida. In those regions it is both terrain and the boundary between onshore and offshore flow that generates the lift needed for storm development.

@vujacicm A big difference is the location within the larger global circulation belts. Hot air rises in the tropics, and that rising motion creates clouds and thunderstorms. The air spreads north and south from the equator and cools as it does so.

Cool air is denser than warm air and sinks to the ground. Around 30°N and 30°S, the air is sinking. You need to lift moisture to create clouds. Because the air over the Mediterranean is sinking, that high moisture content is trapped near the surface and does not form clouds.

This describes conditions generally and there are obviously times when there are storms along the Mediterranean, but this is why precipitation values there are far lower than in the tropics over the course of the year. This is also why the world's major warm deserts (Sahara, Gobi, Mojave) are located near 30° from the equator.
