May be a graphical way can help you understand the difference between the mean wind (= Wind in Windy) and the gusts (= Wind gusts in Windy).
Here is a recording of the wind speed for about ten minutes. You see that the speed of wind is not constant and this recording shows speed peaks. During 10 minutes the average speed corresponds to the mean wind and the maximum peak to the strongest gust.
