RE: The week starts with nice weather on Sicily, sunny days ahead
Black sea snow effect is expected over the next few days
All is set for a cold wave over the southeast Europe, because of a strong area of high pressure, EKART, that’s dominating the atmospheric scenery over most of Europe.
Since it spins in clock wise, it’s pushing down arctic cold air mass, that will be reaching southeastern areas by tomorrow, such as Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, then even more down south.
The result of that, it will be an amazing and interesting meteorologic phenomenon: the so-called Black sea snow effect, which is able to give snowfalls along north Turkey.
How does that phenomenon happen?
First, it occurs in colder atmospheric conditions. Indeed, cold air moves over warmer sea water, heating up and picking up vapor. Consequently, it rises up through cold air above, creating bands of clouds that are able to provide fresh snowfalls, particularly at the top of hills, where temperatures are lower.
Besides, in conditions of strong winds, the snow can fall over coastal areas, giving amazing and unexpected sceneries.

RE: The first worsening of 2020 is on the track to Mediterranean
@Gkikas-LGPZ You are right and thanks for the correction 👍🏻
The first worsening of 2020 is on the track to Mediterranean
It's another anticyclonic day today over the Mediterranean that is still protected by a wide high pressure area as we can see the picture above.
However, if we have a look at northwest, something is destined to change during the next weekend.
According to the latest forecasts, the first rainfalls and snowfalls will start to approach the northwest Italy over Friday night, when colder air, coming from north Europe, will create a orographic low over Gulf of Genoa. From that, the first perturbation of the year will start to hit mostly north and central Italy, bringing with it a sensible fall in temperatures too.
Further certainties seem to come from the graphic above, which is an esemble weather forecast. In other words, it is a set of forecasts that present a range of future weather possibilities.
That one refers to Milan, where an important worsening is expected over next few days, followed by a drop in temperatures.
This one, instead, refers to Lecce in south Italy, where the third decade of the month will begin wet and pretty unstable, and temperatures will come back to average (the red line on the graphic).
Therefore, a high pressure system will be able to reach the northwest Atlantic, between Ireland and the United Kingdom, pushing down cold air from north-northeast Europe, bringing more wintery weather to central and west Mediterranean.

Camels and snow: they get along very well
While we are reading several articles about the strong polar vortex, or the 850mb temperature anomalies along Northeast Europe, snow has fallen over Saudi Arabia.
This picture, taken yesterday, has already gone all over the world. Icy air has hit these areas, bringing rare sceneries and marvelous at the same time.
A thin blanket of fresh snow covers the desert, near Tabuk.
Winter has taken a break over Mediterranean
After a cold wave that mostly hit south Italy through strong north winds, Winter is far away from Mediterranean.
As we can see, the picture shows us a strong and wide high pressure bridge, called Bernd, that is lying on west-central Europe. The cause is a strong polar vortex that makes high pressure extend from the Azores up to Balkan Peninsula.
Consequently, weather will remain mostly stable, because any perturbations will slide along higher latitudes. Therefore, a real break in between of Winter that, according to the latest forecasts, might last up to the next week.
RE: 2020 starts with the sun in Sicily, minimum temperature gradually increasing
Hello Giuliano, congratulations for your interesting article.
I'm writing from Apulia and I am keen on weather too.
According to the latest forecasts, a new arctic cold wave might reach my region over the next weekend, even though the main target seems to be Greece.
Just an information: how could I write an article about my region or weather in general?
Have a great day, lots of greetings .
