    • When nature puts on a show

      Over the last few days, we have received some reports, coming from the southern Adriatic coast, where the sea developed a stunning and marvelous coloration.

      photo: Meteopugliainfoto

      The cause is a algae, called Noctiluca Scintillas. In practice, it is able to generate bioluminescence when its cells are subjected to an external mechanical stimulus. The mechanism is based on the action of the enzyme luciferase, that catalyzes the redox reaction, which brings a light emission.

      It is usually brown during the day and fluorescent at night, as we can see trough the pictures below:

    • Spring dynamism in force

      As you know, spring is an intermediate season, in between winter and summer.
      For that reason, it can sometimes have in store quick change in pattern, showing us all its dynamism.

      photo: by Windy.com; desc: temperature; licence: cc

      Here's what will happen during the next few days across Europe that will be crossed by different air mass.

      photo: by Windy.com; desc: 850hPa temperature; licence: cc

      A gradual change will start tomorrow, when Arctic Maritime air mass starts to approach the British isles, bringing a sensible drop in temperatures during the next weekend.

      photo: by Wetterzentrale; desc: temp / rain forevast

      For example, the picture above shows us the sharp fall expected in London on Sunday. It seems that we’ll pass from the current mild temperatures to under average, decreasing even of 10 degrees.

      Obviously, the cold airflow, moving down, will bring two important consequences:

      photo: by Windy.com; desc: rain accumulation; licence:cc

      first, it will be able to create a deep low-pressure system over western Europe, in between France and Spain, where a severe worsening, according to the latest forecasts, is expected.

      On the other hand, the deep low, spinning in anti-clockwise, will start to push warm air from North Africa towards the eastern Mediterranean.

      In fact, from south Italy, moving along east Europe, there will be a sensible rise in temperatures. It might look like early summer for many of us, because temperatures might get up to summer values, especially along internal areas.

      photo: by Windy.com; desc: temperature; licence: cc

      Therefore, big contrasts are forecasted across Europe from next weekend, showing us the changeable aspect of spring.

    • Finally winter is going to cross Europe

      We are experiencing a winter mostly influenced by a strong polar vortex, pushing several deep low pressure systems along high altitudes and causing the extension and the strengthening of a high pressure system over the southern Europe where winter is missed so far.

      photo: Windy.com; desc: pressure; licence: cc

      We can see that through the picture above, where a wide high pressure area is extending from Azores to Balkans, holding wintry sceneries along north Europe, from Britain isles up to Black Sea.

      However, signs of change are forecasted over the next few days:

      photo: Pivotal Weather; desc: 850hPa Temperatures

      If we have a look at the 850hPa temperatures, we can see that a cold wave is going to cross our Continent, bringing a sharp fall in temperatures, up to the Mediterranean.

      Obviously, all that will bring wintery showers, mixed of rain and snow along the Central Europe, such as France, Germany and Austria.

      photo: Windy.com; desc: rain snow forecasted; licence: cc

      As we wrote earlier, the cold air, coming from north Europe, will be able to reach the Mediterranean, where temperatures will drop sensibly, coming back to average or slightly under.

      Moreover, weather will get unsettled, with scattered showers and thunderstorms due to the thermic contrasts. Finally, snowfalls will appear over the Alps and the Apennines again.

      photo: Windy.com; licence: cc

      From Thursday 27th, further snowfalls will move eastward, hitting the Balkans, whereas a new Atlantic perturbation will be ready to reach the Central Europe with new wintry sceneries.

      Therefore, we can really say: welcome back winter.

    • Storm Ciara up north vs. high pressure down south

      North Europe is getting ready to experience a stormy weekend due to a severe worsening.

      photo:Windy.com;licence:cc;

      Most of Europe is currently protected by a high pressure system as the picture above shows us an “Omega Blocking Pattern”. It’s pushing rainfalls and exceptional snowfalls to east.

      However, weather is going to change drastically over the North Atlantic, that will be reached by a deep low-pressure system, coming from US and pushed energetically from the Jet Stream.

      Indeed, both Ireland and England are preparing to experience a stormy worsening. It has been called Storm Ciara, and the Met Office has already issued several yellow Severe Weather warnings for strong winds and heavy rain, in particular on Saturday evening into all Sunday long.

      photo:Pivotal Weather

      The pressure values will be so low that strong winds will hit north Europe, bringing gales, disruption, especially along more exposed areas. Gust winds over 100 km/h are forecasted.

      photo:Windy.com;desc:Wind gusts forecast;licence:cc;

      Besides, by Monday , the low will be moved westward , bringing further rainfalls and strong winds all over the north Europe, including France, Germany and Scandinavian countries, up to Poland and Russia.

      Its position, over the North Sea, will be able to pushing down colder air, causing snow showers and blizzard conditions across north Ireland and north England too.

      photo:Windy.com;licence:cc;desc:Rain/snowfall forecast;

      Meanwhile, all that will strengthen the high pressure system over the Mediterranean, where it will remain mostly dry, settled and mild.

    • After Easter, cold air is to cross eastern Europe

      It was really a mild Easter for most of us, though still in lockdown due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

      photo: Windy.com; desc: Easter’s high temperatures; licence: cc

      We could enjoy plenty of sunny spells with high temperatures, even over 20 degrees, thank to a wide area of high pressure that makes the atmosphere stable and pushing the values above average.

      photo: Windy.com; desc: 850 hPa temperatures; licence: cc

      However, a quick worsening is forecasted during the next 48-72 hours.
      An area of high pressure will be able to set between Ireland and the United Kingdom Since it spins in clockwise, cold air, coming from Scandinavian, will start to sly down along its eastern side, bringing unsettled weather on the way.

      Therefore, a cold front is ready to cross the eastern Europe on Easter Monday, bringing a sensible drop in temperatures too.

      photo: Windy.com; desc: clouds plus rain; licence: cc

      Moreover, it will be reaching the Balkans and Italy by Tuesday, making weather get worse quickly, especially along the Adriatic regions, where showers and thunderstorms are expected, followed by strong northern winds.

      photo: Windy.com; desc: atmospheric pressure; licence: cc

      The worsening is going to last just a few days, because another high-pressure bridge might come back to be the key player over most of our Continent, giving us further sunny and mild days.

    • Big contrasts across Europe

      Rain has arrived over the Mediterranean, bringing copious spring rainfall.

      This time, we can describe what’s currently going on, using a magnificent picture, coming from outer space and taken last night.

      photo: by Zoom Earth

      Here's a stunning view over our Continent, where we can see the low-pressure system that has reached the Mediterranean, called “Vera”.

      A row of clouds that draw a vortex around a low of 996hPa near the Sardinia, in the middle of the night light.

      Meanwhile, blue skies up north, thanks to a strong area of high pressure, called “Odilo”, that’s providing plenty of sunshine.

      photo: by Windy.com; desc: pressure; desc: cc

      As we can see the picture above, further rain is forecasted across the Mediterranean over the next few days, since the current system of low pressure is going to strengthen further.

      photo: by Skiron forecast; desc: dust concentration

      Moreover, a huge amount of fine dust, coming from the Sahara desert has been brought by the southern winds. Consequently, rain might be a mixture of water and sand which can give a weird yellowish colour in the sky.

    • Winter has taken a break over Mediterranean

      After a cold wave that mostly hit south Italy through strong north winds, Winter is far away from Mediterranean.

      As we can see, the picture shows us a strong and wide high pressure bridge, called Bernd, that is lying on west-central Europe. The cause is a strong polar vortex that makes high pressure extend from the Azores up to Balkan Peninsula.

      Consequently, weather will remain mostly stable, because any perturbations will slide along higher latitudes. Therefore, a real break in between of Winter that, according to the latest forecasts, might last up to the next week.

    • Black sea snow effect is expected over the next few days

      photo:DWD;

      All is set for a cold wave over the southeast Europe, because of a strong area of high pressure, EKART, that’s dominating the atmospheric scenery over most of Europe.

      Since it spins in clock wise, it’s pushing down arctic cold air mass, that will be reaching southeastern areas by tomorrow, such as Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, then even more down south.

      The result of that, it will be an amazing and interesting meteorologic phenomenon: the so-called Black sea snow effect, which is able to give snowfalls along north Turkey.

      How does that phenomenon happen?

      First, it occurs in colder atmospheric conditions. Indeed, cold air moves over warmer sea water, heating up and picking up vapor. Consequently, it rises up through cold air above, creating bands of clouds that are able to provide fresh snowfalls, particularly at the top of hills, where temperatures are lower.

      Besides, in conditions of strong winds, the snow can fall over coastal areas, giving amazing and unexpected sceneries.

    • Altre 48 ore di clima mite, poi veloce parentesi invernale per l'Italia, specie per il centro-sud.

      La settimana che sta per iniziare sarà, dal punto di vista meteorologico, caratterizzata da una vivace dinamicità atmosferica, che garantirà sensibili contrasti termici.

      Andiamo per ordine:

      photo: Windy.com;licence:cc;

      Nella seguente immagine possiamo osservare un promontorio anticiclonico di natura sub-tropicale che sta determinando condizioni climatiche stabili e decisamente miti per periodo sul Mediterraneo.

      Nella giornata odierna, 2 Febbraio, si sono registrate temperature dal sapore primaverile, con valori massimi che hanno sfiorato anche i 18 gradi. Temperature quasi estive, sono state rilevate addirittura lungo la Spagna meridionale, con picchi fino a 27 gradi.

      Un mese di Febbraio che quindi ha deciso di esordire con Temperature decisamente miti e al di sopra della media stagionale, e che rimarranno tali per altre 48 ore, prima di un deciso crollo termico.

      photo:Wetterzentrale;

      La seguente immagine, ad esempio, si riferisce all'andamento della Temperatura alla quota isobarica di 850hPa, per la città di Milano.

      Possiamo notare come ci sia un sopra media, indicata dalla linea rossa, di ben 10 gradi, e si evince anche il crollo termico previsto durante la notte tra Martedì e Mercoledì, riportando le Temperature in linea con le medie stagionali, o poco al di sotto.

      infatti, in virtù di ciò, forse è più corretto dire che fa più notizia il periodo decisamente mite che stiamo vivendo, e che l'imminente ondata di aria più fredda, avrà il merito di riportare delle condizioni meteorologiche più consone al mese appena iniziato.

      photo: Windy.com;licence:cc;

      In pratica, nella giornata di Mercoledì 5 Febbraio, un'area di alta pressione andrà ad elevarsi lungo il nord Atlantico, posizionando i suoi massimi di pressione in corrispondenza delle isole Britanniche.

      Lungo la sua spalla orientale, inizierà a scivolare aria fredda, di estrazione artico -marittima, che rapidamente fagociterà la nostra penisola, riportando condizioni climatiche dal sapore invernali.

      photo: Windy.com;licence:cc;

      Sulla base degli ultimi aggiornamenti, il reale obbiettivo della seguente discesa fredda, saranno le regioni del versante adriatico e quelle centro-meridionali, attraverso sostenuti venti nord orientali con raffiche, che lungo le zone più esposte, potranno superare gli 80 km/h, e aumenteranno la percezione del freddo, che risulterà essere particolarmente pungente.

      Inoltre, l'aria fredda in arrivo avrà il merito di riportare anche una discreta instabilità atmosferica, con piogge e temporali. infatti tra Mercoledì e Giovedì, si potranno avere piogge diffuse con locali temporali grandinigeni, e la neve ritornerà ad imbiancare i rilievi Appenninici del centro-sud. La quota neve inoltre potrà abbassarsi ulteriormente fino a quote collinari. Mentre in pianura, al massimo si potranno avere fenomeni di neve tonda o gragnola.

      Si tratterà comunque di fenomeni poco organizzati, in seguito alla mancanza di un minimo depressionario sui nostri mari, capace di sfruttare la massimo le potenzialità dell'aria fredda in arrivo.

      Ad esempio, avremo un'instabilità causata dal cosiddetto ASE, Adriatic effect snow , a causa proprio dello scivolamento di aria molto fredda sulla superficie del mare Adriatico, che risulta più mite a carica di umidità.

      photo: Windy.com;licence:cc;

      Quì possiamo osservare i possibili accumuli nevosi previsti dal modello previsionale europeo ECMWF. Si evidenziano i rilievi del Appennino centro-meridionale, insieme al Gargano, e Murgia pugliese.

      Quindi due altri giorni di clima primaverile, poi parentesi invernale, specie sulle regioni del centro-sud. Difatti, già nella giornata di Giovedì, l'Alta pressione inizierà a guadagnare terreno da Ovest. Anche al sud avremo maggiore stabilità atmosferica in un contesto ancora ventilato e piuttosto fresco.

      Successivamente le temperature sono destinate a risalire nuovamente.

    • Winter is going to knock on the door

      Good Sunday everyone.

      We are approaching the end of November, and the European continent is under the effects of a typical late autumn atmospheric circulation. Anticyclone of the Azores defiladed in the Atlantic, and two low pressure areas, one over Denmark and another over Northern Italy, are pushing very cold air of arctic maritime extraction towards the Mediterranean, giving the first winter scenarios.

      Over the next few days, the cold air will be able to move further eastwards, south-eastwards, reaching even the southern Adriatic and the Aegean Sea, bringing the first taste of winter.

      This trend is going to continue during the next few weeks, so coats and gloves at the ready, as winter starts knocking on the door.

      Smell of summer across most of Europe. It was really a warm start for some.

      We can say that that is almost normal along south Europe, but extremely remarkable for higher altitudes where summer has been back.

      photo: by Windy.com; desc: temperatures; licence: cc

      The reason is a wide high-pressure area that let warmer air reach central Europe, such as France, Germany, Poland...up to South England where temperatures are above average for the period of the year.

      Almost 30 degrees tomorrow, bringing a pleasant taste of summer, pushing the Atlantic perturbations further up north.

      Here, just a look at the sea along the southern Adriatic coast of Apulia, Itlay, where summer is still dominating.

    • African heat will hug the Mediterranean

      There are two days left to the last week of July, without recording a significant heatwave over southern Europe.

      It has been a mild summer so far, often dynamic, under the effect of the Azores anticyclone.

      Obviously, we got warm days but without excesses, holding temperatures near the average.

      photo: Windy.com; desc: temperature; licence: cc

      However, according to the latest forecasts, warmer air coming from North Africa is ready to take revenge on the Azores, bringing the first intense heatwave of the season over the Mediterranean.

      photo: Windy.com; desc: temperature; licence: cc

      Therefore, from Monday we expect a sensible increase in temperatures over most of Europe. They might touch 40 degrees across some southern areas.

      photo: Windy.com; desc: temperature; licence: cc

      It will be hot along most of central Europe too. Travelling from Spain to Eastern Europe, temperatures will be above average, especially during early in the week, then the Atlantic perturbations will be able to bring variable weather, among clouds, rainfall and sudden sunny spells.

      Are you ready? Let's get started to think about a good remedy to refresh ourselves.

      We can see a wide area of high pressure, called Steffen, that's dominating the scenery over most of our Continent.

      It’s currently keeping clouds away from central-western Europe, bringing warm and stable weather.

      More clouds at east, due to cold air, that’s going down from the northeast, bringing passing showers, with scattered thunderstorms, especially during the warmest hours of the day.

      That will be the trend during the next few days: good weather to west, pretty unstable to east.
