I spent a lot of time with my grandparents, even though I lived then in the south of England, and they in the north. I would head to their house with my sister for summer holidays, sometimes a month at a time. I loved being there. It was very different from my own relatively modern suburban life. Grittier, more real in many ways. Hull was a fishing port, and there was a fish-and-chip shop on just about every street.
