I decided to compare the Currents layer in the Map API with Windy.com to find out how frequent the updates are.
I took screenshots in 15 min intervals of both the Map API and Windy.com one next to the other.
In the Map API, at around 2 am (GMT+2) the last update time changes from "10h ago" to "4h ago" which shows that even after the update and at any time, we are presented with outdated Currents layer.
The 1st screenshot was taken at around 1:37 am, and the 2nd one 15 mins later. (GMT+2)
Furthemore, Windy.com also updates once every 24 hours, but again, when it updates, the data presented are from a few hours ago.
So my questions are actually some clarifications. As we need the Currents layer from Windy, we have to know exactly what data we are being shown.
- When exactly does the Map API update happen? Is it consistently at around 2 am (GMT+2)?
- When the update happens in the Map API, are the data from how many hours before? In the example the Currents layer after the update, had the data from 4h ago. Is that always the case?
- Is Windy.com indeed more frequently updated? What are the exact times they are being updated?
- When Windy.com Currents layer updates, the new data is from the same exact time it was updated, or again from a few hours ago like the Maps API?
As a Pro user for the Windy Map API, the exact frequency and time of updates for each of the layers (in our case Currents is a priority) is something we actually need.
