Your software update you did in the past 18 hours is terrible. Please return distance and planning to where it was. It is unusable to me in the latest version. I supply weather Routing to sailors at sea and I can’t do it the way it is. Thank you. Trevor Richards

Horrible Update

RE: Horrible Update
Thanks for the quick response. I use an IPad. When using distance and planning, I need to be able to accurately place the starting position in mid ocean at a particular lat and long coordinate. I don't see how I can move the starting point in the new version other than hit and miss until I get it right. I also need the distance and bearing between waypoints before I click on “add waypoint”, as it used to do. Now it’s just giving an accumulated total. I need to be able to delete any waypoint, not just the last one. I need to be able to move a previously placed waypoint. Your previous version worked perfectly for me, this one does not. I know the GGR yacht race used Windy, along with many other sailors and I know they will be equally disappointed in the way this version works.
Thanks for listening! -
RE: Horrible Update
Well that’s the problem, the Distance and Planning feature is now useless. Wow, they really messed this up - if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!

RE: Horrible Update
I don’t use the route planning function, I do my own planning based on the sailor I’m helping, both his/her experience and boat characteristics.

RE: Horrible Update
@idefix37 You can’t tell the position of the cross hairs for the first waypoint before you drop it. You can’t tell the bearing of #1 to # 2 until after you have dropped #2. You can’t move waypoints once you have placed them unless you select “boat”, after which you can’t add any waypoints or see the bearings. Yikes

@Ondřej-Šutera do you know if there are any plans to undo this update and revert to the previous one?

RE: Please bring back the weather picker as before
@Korina With all due respect, there is less map visible when you show coordinates. Can I ask you to perform the following hypothetical exercise to try to explain to you some of the problems that you have created with the new UI.
A sailboat heading from Virginia Beach to Newfoundland. We are going to do the weather routing for him using your distance and planning feature. This used to be a brilliant feature of Windy.
First day out he is forecast to have a good following wind so I will assume a speed of 6 knots or 144 nautical miles for the first day, on a suggested course of 060T.
Second day, not so much wind so he is likely to slow to 5 knots or 120 miles. Same course.
Third day, light north north east winds, 110 miles course 080
Fourth day no wind , motor towards the destination at 5 knots. And so on….I am doing this on an IPad because windy used to work perfectly on the iPad for me.
If you go ahead and try to do this exercise for yourself you will immediately see a number of problems and you will see it is impossible to perform this task, which used to be simple.
- When trying to determine where to drop a waypoint based on course, you can’t.
- When trying to drop subsequent waypoints you can’t see the distance between them or the bearing before dropping the pin.
- When you “show coords” and the box drops down and and after a number of waypoints have been dropped, you can no longer see what you are doing if you are heading north.
- You can’t move a previously placed waypoint while you are laying out the course.
- You can’t zoom our to see where your destination is or get a wider picture of the weather systems while you are doing this plotting without the darn weather picker ending up who knows where.
It is frustrating and useless.
Before your update I was providing a weather routing service for sailors. Windy was absolutely brilliant for this. I was happy to pay the premium and would have paid more. I have since suspended my business and taken down my website starweatherrouting.com because trying to use the new windy is impossible and I would not be able to provide accurate routing suggestions to my clients. I am suggesting to them to use PredictWind instead.
I have been reading the feedback from your customers and it’s obvious 95% of them are unhappy with this update. You should seriously consider reverting to the previous version.

RE: Horrible Update
@idefix37 Sorry, I meant to add that yes, the functionality of the PC to move, add, delete waypoints with a side bar showing coordinates, course and distance is perfect. I would just like that functionality brought back for the iPad users. Thanks

RE: Horrible Update
@idefix37 That is correct, I am on the boat a lot or otherwise traveling and the iPad works well because I have cell service on it, so I can use it to do my routing whenever I am, in the car or even in a restaurant. I can use the PC at home and replicate what your screen shot is showing, and I have used it in the past, but the reason I preferred the iPad was that I did not have to contend with that mess of weather information covering the bottom of the screen. Windys route planning option might be good for flying or on a cruise ship with a predetermined course and speed, but it does not work for sailors.
I have also noted some pilots on your feedback not happy with the new version, because they are too using iPads I would imagine. They are so convenient!
Anyway, I appreciate you looking into it and hopefully something will be resolved. -
RE: Horrible Update
@idefix37 Good Morning! That is exactly right - to be able to delete, grab (and move) and add waypoints with the distance and planning tool. In addition, to be able to put your first waypoint on a precise latitude and longitude (you will need to show the latitude and longitude of the cross hairs at all times) and then you also need the bearing and distance between each subsequent waypoint before you drop the waypoint. When doing human routing advice (as opposed to AI), the course and speed of the sailboat will depend on the forecasted wind speed and direction, which can vary immensely based on where you think the boat will be in the future. For this reason, it is important to be able to place waypoints (of future dead reckoning positions for the sailor) with reasonable accuracy. It is not unusual for me to place future waypoints at 12 hour intervals into the future for up to 5 days. With the new coordinates table showing with 10 coordinates, almost half the map is hidden. It was better before with the table in the bottom left of the screen.
I did want to add that I find the Euro model extremely accurate and because of that I am able to advise my sailors to almost the exact hour of frontal passages and wind shifts. Also rain and thunder forecasts for squalls tend to be very accurate. Of course I do need to have the ability to plot their positions in the oceans (I do trans Atlantic and trans Pacific weather routing) accurately, and that is my problem at the moment. The previous version worked brilliantly for me on my iPad before. So 👍👍on all the weather information you provide, just need to fix the plotting feature.
Thank you -
RE: Horrible Update
@Ondřej-Šutera Thank you. If you could at least give us an option to make the distance and planning feature work the way it used to then I can go back to using Windy. I’m not concerned with the large icons - they look ridiculous but you would get used to it. Thanks again for your response.

@EncrypterPepper you are absolutely spot on with your comments!

RE: Excellent new features
@DMByass - that great that you like the new version. I do weather routing for sailors crossing oceans and I have not been able to use the new version for plotting. I use an iPad and it was super easy before. Can you explain how you are able to place the first waypoint easily, see the bearing between waypoint before dropping it, move a waypoint without going to “boat “ mode (because you can’t come back). I am just finding it very awkward to do anything in this new version, but maybe I am just being dumb- perhaps you could help? Thanks
