I have created a plugin to display soundings for paraglider pilots.
You can try it by installing windy-plugin-sounding
.
It's still in early stages - feedback welcome.
Thanks to John C. Kealy - I borrowed some code from his skewt plugin.

I have just seen that the webcams are online.
Thanks !
The plugin now works better on mobile and tablets.
As a reminder plugins do not work on the installed mobile apps but you can use them by loading windy in a web browser on your mobile or tablet.
Visit https://www.windy.com/plugins/windy-plugin-sounding to load the plugin on a mobile device.
@ekostogorov @TZ my plugin (windy-plugin-sounding) does support skewT (uncheck the "zoom view" checkbox at the bottom). It can be loaded on mobile by visiting windy.com/plugin however it does not well yet because I need to adapt the size to mobile screen.
It should probably not take too long to do but I have deferred for now that since loading plugins on mobile (especially in the app) is not well supported.
Thanks @ivo
So the "better" way to retrieve favorites is
import favs from "@windy/favs";
// or
// var favs = W.require('favs');
Then
favs.getAll();
returns:
{

and
favs.getArray();
returns:

When using the pluginDataLoader to load airData for {lat: 43.976, lon: 6.483}
I got the following:

The values are way off (ie gh-900 should be a little below 1000m).
It look like they are off by a factor of 10 ?
@kekert You can use this script to extract the camera positions, url and azimuth. Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks
I'd love to see more info about the available data too.
May be the plugins repo on github would be a good place to add them ?
Check exemples 10 and 7 at https://github.com/windycom/windy-plugins
@Gkikas-LGPZ Units should be what you have configured in windy settings - I'll add them on the graphs at some point.
There are quite a few things I want to improve/polish and then I'll get the android app you pointed to. Thanks !
Go to "https://www.windy.com/-Settings/settings" (settings menu)
You can setup the strartup location to be ip /gps / one of your favorites
I use u & v interpolations.
There is one gotcha when you do angle interpolation wrt to wrapping: avg(310, 50) is 0 not 360 / 2.
Hey @johnckealy,
It is possible that you are referring to me in your last comment ?
I have released windy-plugin-sounding
a few days ago.
I took inspiration from your plugin for the computation of the adiabatic lines - thanks :)
You can check the code at https://github.com/vicb/windy-plugin-sounding
It's still an early version.
My plan is to make the code more modular. Maybe we could work on some common components.
Let me know when you have time for pairing on that.
Thanks @Korina
I sent those info to Marek:
It seems like the parameter we are looking for is HPBL (see https://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/products/gfs/gfs.t00z.sfluxgrbf00.grib2.shtml variable #109) and some description of the Boundary layer in https://vlab.ncep.noaa.gov/web/gfs/documentation section 1.2.2
It's not exactly clear to me if this parameter HPBL is part of the GFS variables.
ECMWF seems to have it too: https://apps.ecmwf.int/codes/grib/param-db?id=260083
@johnckealy right click anywhere on the map and select (the bottom most item) "Better sounding"
@ivo I'm all for it if possible. As @Gkikas-LGPZ mentions the sounding is more adapted for paraglider pilots currently and I probably need to make some small changes:
All of this should be easy enough and there could be a setting to have a generic version or a specialized version for paraglider (a checkbox).
@Gkikas-LGPZ as mentioned above the current upper level is 400hPa but that's only a setting to change. I have just checked for the units. It seems like "ft" does not work ie altitude is always displayed in meters but "kt" works for me for the wind (You have to reload the page & plugin when you change the units). There is currently no way to have hPa on the y axis but that would be simple to implement.
@Gkikas-LGPZ please check 0.8.2 that I have just published:
You probably need to specify the name as sounding@0.8.2
when loading it for now.
@stitch good catch. The line was still potted with the wrong scale in unzoomed mode. This should be fixed in 0.8.5. (You can specify the version when loading the plugin using the name windy-plugin-soundig@0.8.5
before it becomes the default in a few hours).
With regards to the scale in zoomed mode:
The plugin is originally targeted to paraglider pilots.
That's why I do not display hPa but elevation on the y axis and stop at ~7000m.
Given that a paraglider fly at ~40km/h we are less interested in speed > 30km/h - we would start flying backward in gusts and also have turbulences.
That's why having more granularity in the 0-30k range is interesting - we are only remotely interested in >30.
It does not affect us that much: we wouldn't fly in that zone but knowing the max speed higher still could be interesting.
That being said I'm open to extending the plugin for more use cases - we started discussing that with @johnckealy.
What I do not want is to have to configure 20 different options to use the plugin but what I could imagine is to have a handful of different "profiles" (paragliding, meteo, ...) each having a sensible configuration.
Having a shared google doc could help everybody interested share ideas ? Do you want to start one ?
I would love to see plugin on mobile app & web too !
