    • ECMWF vs GFS – Which one do you trust more for local forecasts?

      Hi Windy community,

      I’ve been using Windy for a while to monitor weather for sailing and hiking trips around the Mediterranean. I often switch between ECMWF and GFS, but I’ve noticed they can sometimes give quite different forecasts — especially for wind speed and rain.

      From what I understand:

      • ECMWF is generally considered more accurate, especially in Europe, but updates less frequently and isn’t open-source.

      • GFS updates more often (every 6 hours) and is free/open, but some say it’s less accurate with local-level predictions.

      In your experience, which model do you rely on more — especially for short-range forecasts (1–3 days)?
      Do you combine multiple models or stick with one?

      Curious to hear what others think — particularly users in coastal or mountainous regions!

    • RE: SignalK Windy Plugin

      @Canne said in SignalK Windy Plugin:

      @LaSiroque
      see above:

      I do not know if you have navigation.position or environment.outside.temperature, but seeing your list of wind data, looks that you may need signalk-derived-data plugin for environment.wind.directionGround (DEPRECATED and unchecked in your list).

      One can calculate environment.wind.directionGround from true heading and true wind anglen (you need these, at least). signalk-derived-data plugin can do this for you.

      For environment.outside.temperature you would need a sensor. It is a sensible requirement for a weather station that it submits a temperature value for your (moving) spot.

      You can study your existing instruments, maybe the data is available but not transmitted for some reason. For example, I have two temperature values available, one from the barometer and one from the ultrasound wind sensor. My barometer is inside the cabin so I had to disable its temperature value in favor of the value given by the wind sensor.

      If you have no luck, the easiest way is to purchase a sensor, which can be plugged in on your NMEA-2000 bus (or its Raymarine etc. derivates with an adapter), for example https://www.yachtd.com/products/grade calculator/sensors.html

      I just learned about SignalK integration with Windy, thanks for the useful sharing
