      difference between a Wall cloud and a mothership

      Hi @bobergurba

      'Mothership' is the non-meteorological word for the whole thunderstorm. For example, in the plains in the US, if a supercell forms, you can call it the Mothership.

      The wall cloud is a part of the supercell that descends below the thunder that - if correct conditions - a tornado will form beneath coming down from the wall cloud

      In this picture, the 'Mothership is the whole cloud and the wall cloud is labeled at the bottom.

      Hope it helps!

    • RE: new user: how are alerts working

      Hi @patrickdrd

      Welcome to Windy! I see that you want to get alerts for Metamorphosis to know if the forecast has: Any snow between 20cm - 500cm, Rain 10mm-100mm, Temperature (-60)-60c and if the wind is between 3-12bft. The issue is that Windy treats these conditions as one, so for the alert to trigger, you would have to have all of the weather conditions on the forecast - which the chances are very low.

      Instead, create 4 separator Alerts with each one having only one condition; Like

      • First Alert: New Snow 20cm-500cm

      • Second Alert: Rainfall 10mm-100mm

      • Third Alert: Temperature (-60)-60c

      • Fourth Alert: Wind 3-12bft

      Hope this helps and let us know if it works.

      (@idefix37 Might have a previous post with an explainer)

    • RE: Models need help

      Weather prediction can be hard. 1 small change in the 1st day can lead to major changes 10-15 days out. Forecasts past a week are unreliable but are useful to see what might pan out. To metrologist (Not Me), seeing the general picture is useful.

      Even through ECMWF may show a colder period out 12-15 days, this shows that it might be cold but you can't take anything beyond 7 days. Anything beyond 7 days usually shows the general picture, to quite a few people (like me), I read it and "Okay, we might have high pressure next week so it will be mild".

      In the UK, around mid-december I saw a colder period around New Year incoming. All I could see was that the temperatures were around 3-5c lower than usual. Not until around 3 days out I started looking at what might happen during this colder period. ECMWF beyond 7 days is good at see what might pan out but take anything it says with a pinch of salt beyond 7 days. Look at the forecast over 3-4 days and if it is saying the same thing then you can assume that but if it changing, there is usually something going on in the atmosphere that is leading to the "jumpy" models

      (Experts - Feel free to jump in and correct me)

      I hope this shows why forecasts jump a lot

      If you have any follow up question, just reply :)

      @Wheats said in Suggestion: Annotation:

      Especially in a time sensitive situation like weather watch or even just developing a slew of mapped products for an organization. Screenshot-drawing app-dissemination is incredibly time consuming.
      Adding this type of capbabilty could make Windy a go-to for operational meteorologist who have to produce and disseminate products to others as well, not just enthusiasts or sailors or pilots etc.

      Exactly mine use!

      I know this was 5 days ago, but thought I would explain my use case for it. Quite commonly I am showing family/friends weather stuff and circling with a mouse doesn't really help me explain it but for example - if I could highlight an area and then switch to a different layer and then explain it - most people do not have a photographic memory to remember all that data and then try and project it again in their heads on the new data layer

      @Suty

      Hello

      Happen on the 25-26 Nov only. It happened 3 times out of the 10 or so times I used the Radar layer between those dates. A refresh of the page fixed it and put the time to local time. I haven't had it happen since but will you let you know if it changes

      Thanks

      Frontal systems - [link text]https://community.windy.com/topic/5629/addition-of-fronts(link url)
      Isobars - You should just be able to flip the switch button to turn them on
      The color of them - Unsure but @Suty or @idefix37 should be able to help

      Hopeful that answers your questions.

      I usually do that. But I thought I would ask

    • RE: Snow forecast [appears incorrectly]

      @anthony10

      Just a hunch;

      Was looking and found that 4.7cm can accumulate in 1hr and the forecast will show 4.7mm of rainfall at 3c. From the sounding, it only turns warm in the last 1000ft or so, so my guess is:

      ECMWF (or other) will predict snow falling but as it is a few degrees over freezing it will have the snow touching the ground but due to it being warmer than 0, it will melt so it shows that same amount as rainfall

      What do you think?

      I was going to report his as a bug. last week but forgot.

      @marekd - some weather stations seems to have that Pressure Icon and some don't. For example:

      An Airport in NE England shows the Pressure

      While my PWS has never shown it despite it report it. It is still on API v1 though

    • RE: Confidence indication

      @JojoS said in Confidence indication:

      Would it be possible to display the confidence in the model accuracy?
      For example at this location the wind direction, strength, temperature, etc will be X. What will be the percentage change that it will rain?
      Currently the display only displays things as certainties. Rain or no rain. The UK MET office displays the % chance of rain. I prefer windy for various reasons, but miss that feature.

      I believe that the UK Met office are moving towards that type of forecast in the near future, they have not confirmed if this data will be available to customers (such as windy.com)

      If you have time then read this artical by the met office - https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/about-us/news-and-media/media-centre/weather-and-climate-news/2026/why-probability-is-the-key-to-future-weather-forecasts

      Basically, when a weather model is run, they have 1 member (when they run the model once) which is run at a high resolution and this is called the Operations run. This is what is displayed on windy, when you click on ECMWF, GFS for example, you are viewing the Operation Run. Then they will run the model again and again with different starting conditions, (not by much, changing a temperature by 1c in one place, etc). This is the ensemble, ECMWF run theirs 50 times each run for example.

      The UK Met Office want to move towards their MOGREPS Model which is an ensemble model rather than just 1 operation run. Then use MOGREPS to look at a location, and work out the probability of rain by looking at the ensemble run, if only 3/10 runs have rain then there would be a 30% probability of rain.

      Since they are doing that, I would imagine that data should become available to the public.

      I hope that makes sense.

      (@idefix37, Please read through it and make sure I have not made any major mistakes when explain it. Thanks)

    • RE: Custom Radar Color Scale does not save after browser close.

      @Suty

      Yes, I did just try. I imported it, then clicked save.

      I closed Chrome and when I repopen it, it is back to the normal colour scale for radar.

      But if I reload windy after opening it the first time, it loads fine.

      Basically, it won't load it on the first open of Windy on a webpage but the second time opening in the same window, it loads fine.

    • Custom Radar Color Scale does not save after browser close.

      After testing the new colour scale made by HardikP, (and this happened the last time I had a custom radar color scale in.)

      It seems not to load that colour scale when the browers has been closed and reopened. It is still there and I have to click "import colour gradient" every time.

      I'm not sure if it is known or if there is a fix to it?
